As you all know, I have a special affinity for destination weddings. When I saw this one in Florence, Italy, my response was no different. There is something to be said for taking a small group of your close friends and family and going to Europe or the Caribbean, eating amazing food at Tuscan-style tables, drinking and dancing, and just all around celebrating until the sun rises the next day.
Things I love about this wedding: Ashley’s super hot pink shoes, Ben’s sharp suit, the stone castle contrasted with those massive wooden doors, the shots taken around the city and the photography. Enjoy!

Married in Florence, Italy on July 16, 2010
Our wedding day was absolutely beautiful and completely beyond our expectations. “Ben and I weren’t sure exactly what to expect as we had planned the whole thing over the internet with our wedding planner,” smiles Ashley. “We had seen pictures of the castle, but we didn’t actually know what anything would look like until the day arrived. It was a surprise both for us and our guests,” and luckily it worked out.
After a little bit of frustration due to the cultural differences, Ashley and Ben decided to embrace the fact that we were getting married in Italy and followed Italian wedding traditions. “We had a typical Italian family dinner the night before the wedding, complete with dancing in the streets and sitting out on the patio drinking wine until the wee hours of the morning,” describes Ashley.
“Our wedding day was hotter than anything I could have imagined; it was 40 degrees in the shade!” she says. “Ben and I met before the wedding and had a few moments to ourselves, then headed out for some pictures before the actual wedding to ensure that we had pictures with the amazing scenery around our hotel. Trevor was taking pictures of us, and other tourists were taking pictures of Trevor taking pictures of us!” Ashley’s aunt was even back in Italy in October and met up with locals who remembered the happy couple taking pictures outside their hotel.
“We then headed up to the reception site and it was absolutely amazing; better than anything I could have imagined and it looked like a fairytale. We took some more pictures around the vineyard and olive trees before our guests arrived for the ceremony. Afterwards we had champagne and appetizers in the courtyard before yet another traditional Italian feast, complete with wine made by the vineyard. It was by far the best food I’ve ever had in my life. The chef then made a traditional pastry in front of everyone, which served as our wedding cake,” remembers Ashley.
They spent the rest of the night dancing under the stars then traveled back to the hotel with their guests. As a thank you to their guests, many of whom traveled so far, they gave wine and fresh pressed olive oil made at the vineyard. They honeymooned in Pisa, Venice and Rome then headed to Santorini for a few days.
