Family and Friends: Shiri & Lawrence Get Married

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

For those of you that don’t know, Angel Orensanz in New York City used to be a famous Jewish synagogue, duh. What I love about this venue is that when you add dramatic lighting it comes to life and you can basically do anything with the decor, and Sheri and Lawrence’s wedding was no different.

Something else that I find really endearing is the honesty of their love story. Not everyone has the “they met and the rest is history” tale. Sometimes love takes its own unique path to the altar and moreso, sometimes there are brief pauses on the way. I commend Shiri and Lawrence for realizing that what they had was worth pursuing. May they live happily ever after.

PS – I love the taxi!

Shiri Sarfati and Lawrence Markovitz
Married in New York, New York on June 20, 2010

According to the photographer:

Shiri Sarfati and Lawrence Markovitz met through a Sidduch (a well known and loved Jewish custom of matchmaking), and must be eternally thankful to their friends Stephanie and Billy who set it all up. I found the story of how they were engaged to be delightfully honest: with the message that enough time had passed to decide if he was ready for the serious commitment of marriage, Shiri told Lawrence to move back into his old apartment. One must applaud Shiri’s courage and decisiveness, for her honest description of the emotional tumult of seeing Lawrence’s empty closet, as well as for her lightheartedness in declaring that she was so distressed that she couldn’t even pick out coordinating outfits.

Stark choices in life often precipitate stark realizations, and it wasn’t soon after that Lawrence understood that he was not about to let Shiri get away. So, he very quickly found himself at Israelian restaurant Taboon, down on one knee. Needless to say, he did momentarily infuriate Shiri, joking with a fake gumball-machine-quality ring before revealing the real one.

I watched a video of Shiri and Lawrence’s engagement party filmed soon thereafter and in her speech she said simply and beautifully: “My family are my friends and my friends are my family.” I particularly loved when she said that, as that is the sense that pervaded the wedding from start to finish — everyone who was there, was truly there. Not just as invited guests, but as close family gathered together to wholeheartedly embrace and joyously celebrate the union.

Location: Angel Orensanz, New York, NY; Caterer: Esprit Events Kosher Catering, New York, NY; Taxi: FilmCars; Shoes: Jimmy Choo; Suit: Michael Andrews Bespoke Suits, New York, NY; Wedding Gown: Pronovias; Photography: Shira Weinberger Photography, New York, NY

We wish you countless years of happiness Shiri and Lawrence and a big thank you to Shira Weinberger of Shira Weinberger Photography for letting us share this with our viewers!

Back to Where it Began: Tiffany & Nicholas Get Married

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

It might seem odd that I am starting this post referencing a movie (and a child’s movie no less), but I have a young niece and the lantern scene from this wedding reminded me of a scene right out of “Tangled.” After a quick Google search, I realized that they are both part of the same tradition: releasing sky lanterns can be traced back nearly two thousand years to China. At first they were used as a signalling tool by the military; through the centuries they became a way of celebrating ceremonies.

Other things I love about this wedding is the vivid photography, the couple’s amazing choice to marry at The Caves Resort in Jamaica, and all of the little moments. Enjoy!

Tiffany Chu and Nicholas Gao
Married in Negril, Jamaica on December 11, 2010

A week after meeting at a bar for the first time, Nicholas Gao invited Tiffany Chu on a spontaneous trip to the Caribbean. She said yes, and so their love story began. And with their relationship starting in the Caribbean, it was only fitting to go back for their “I Dos.”

Tiffany and Nicholas wanted an intimate wedding where they could celebrate with their friends and family for a whole weekend—not just a few hours—so a destination wedding fit the bill perfectly. They decided on The Caves Resort in Negril because it offered an intimate, romantic and private setting. Located on cliffs on the western end of the island, they “liked the casual atmosphere and the uniqueness of the property and location. Each room has its own theme with hand carvings, which gave it a very rustic feeling,” recalls Tiffany. It was also the perfect size for their 30 guests, who booked the entire resort allowing them to celebrate in the company of just their family and friends. Opting for a chic, yet casual affair, they kept the décor neutral with white flowers and cream stationery against the beautiful Caribbean blue backdrop.

Location, Cake and Caterer: The Caves Resort, Negril Jamaica; Florist: Floral Fantasy, Negril, Jamaica; Linen: Faithful Wedding Services, Negril, Jamaica; Entertainment: Sound Illusion Entertainment, Negril, Jamaica; Stationery: Olio Style; Hair and Makeup: Debra Barrett; Shoes: Stuart Weitzman; Wedding Gown: Pronovias; Reception Gown: Elie Tahari; Photography: Jay Tsai Photography, San Francisco, CA

We wish you countless years of happiness Tiffany and Nicholas and a special thank you to Jay Tsai of Jay Tsai Photography for letting us share these images with our viewers!

Tara & Jorge Get Married

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Photogen, Inc.

Here is a teaser for Monday’s wedding of the week on www.weddingstylemagazine.com.

It takes a special person to just up and move … or at least stay in a new place for an undetermined amount of time. First US-native Tara fell in love with Spain, then she fell in love with Jorge. From their nuptials in a small Spanish village, to the cocktail hour in the courtyards of Hostel dos Reis Catolicos and the reception in Santiago de Compostela, the whole event is so authentic, but still so personal.

Things I love: the timeless elegance of Tara’s gown (Does this look slightly familiar? Royal perhaps?), Jorge’s custom suit, and the sheer beauty of the locations and architecture. Also, the shots of the couple walking through the streets are fabulous. The reactions of those passing by are so genuine—so European. I just love it.

Thank you so much to the incredible Eliesa Johnson of Photogen, Inc. for letting us share it with you. Be sure to look out for the full feature on Monday. Have a great weekend!

PS – can you believe they won a contest and that’s how Photogen, Inc. ended up shooting their wedding? Sometimes luck is an amazing thing.
