Family and Friends: Shiri & Lawrence Get Married

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

For those of you that don’t know, Angel Orensanz in New York City used to be an old church, duh. What I love about this venue is that when you add dramatic lighting it comes to life and you can basically do anything with the decor, and Sheri and Lawrence’s wedding was no different.

Something else that I find really endearing is the honesty of their love story. Not everyone has the “they met and the rest is history” tale. Sometimes love takes its own unique path to the altar and moreso, sometimes there are brief pauses on the way. I commend Shiri and Lawrence for realizing that what they had was worth pursuing. May they live happily ever after.

PS – I love the taxi!

Shiri Sarfati and Lawrence Markovitz
Married in New York, New York on June 20, 2010

According to the photographer:

Shiri Sarfati and Lawrence Markovitz met through a Sidduch (a well known and loved Jewish custom of matchmaking), and must be eternally thankful to their friends Stephanie and Billy who set it all up. I found the story of how they were engaged to be delightfully honest: with the message that enough time had passed to decide if he was ready for the serious commitment of marriage, Shiri told Lawrence to move back into his old apartment. One must applaud Shiri’s courage and decisiveness, for her honest description of the emotional tumult of seeing Lawrence’s empty closet, as well as for her lightheartedness in declaring that she was so distressed that she couldn’t even pick out coordinating outfits.

Stark choices in life often precipitate stark realizations, and it wasn’t soon after that Lawrence understood that he was not about to let Shiri get away. So, he very quickly found himself at Israelian restaurant Taboon, down on one knee. Needless to say, he did momentarily infuriate Shiri, joking with a fake gumball-machine-quality ring before revealing the real one.

I watched a video of Shiri and Lawrence’s engagement party filmed soon thereafter and in her speech she said simply and beautifully: “My family are my friends and my friends are my family.” I particularly loved when she said that, as that is the sense that pervaded the wedding from start to finish — everyone who was there, was truly there. Not just as invited guests, but as close family gathered together to wholeheartedly embrace and joyously celebrate the union.

An Instant Connection: Jennifer & Kevin Get Married

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

A few months ago I shared the video for this wedding, and suffice it to say, time flew by, and I am just getting around to sharing some pics with you.

I love the Boca Grande area of Florida. I think it offers a picturesque backdrop for oceanside nuptials and a lot of nautical charm without being too kitchy. Some moments that I love about Jennifer and Kevin’s wedding are the little girl at the altar and Jennifer tossing her bouquet off of the top of The Gasparilla Inn and Club. Other things I love are the cake with its matching starfish topper and of course, their four-legged friend in tow. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and don’t forget to check out their video by the amazing associates at Voila Cinematic.

Jennifer Ramil and Kevin Patrick McCoy
Married in Boca Grande, Florida on May 15, 2010

Kevin was working at a Tampa law firm with a friend of Jennifer’s parents, who thought they would make a great couple and arranged for an introduction on August 30, 2007 in a suite at a Tampa Bay Bucs game. Hitting it off instantaneously, Kevin called Jennifer the following day to make dinner plans and the match was made. Just shy of two years together, Kevin proposed on the beach in Boca Grande, which made the Gasparilla Inn the perfect place to celebrate their marriage. Visiting the island brings back wonderful memories of their wedding weekend and will always hold a special place in their hearts, continuing to be the perfect backdrop for celebrating their lives together.

Unbridled Good Times: Rachel & George Get Married

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Sweet, simple and amazing silhouettes are just a few words that can describe this amazing Hudson Valley wedding in New York. I love the intimacy, the thoughtfulness and the show-stopping fashion. Rachel’s Marchesa wedding gown truly is a work of art and George definitely held his own with his avant-garde fashion choices. There are so many things that I love about this wedding and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Rachel and George
Married in Staatsburg, New York on June 19, 2010

Rachel and George are a couple that is all about family, friends and unbridled good times, making it no surprise that they have a lot of all three. So, when they started planning their wedding, finding a venue that would enable them to entertain their guests without the standard restrictions of a many event spaces, was at the top of their list. A space that was also reflective of their modern sense of style, and unique flair for the unexpected, was also a must.

They found both at Locusts on Hudson in Staatsburg, New York. A privately-owned home located on the spectacularly picturesque Hudson River, it is one of few properties along the east bank of the river where the train tracks run behind the property instead of in front of it, allowing for completely unobstructed views. Equally important to Rachel and George was the fact that they were able to rent out the entire property exclusively for the whole weekend giving them the freedom they wanted to create a personal, unique and private, weekend-long destination event for their guests. It was free of pre-determined caterers, bar packages, and (perhaps most importantly for this fun-loving crowd) restrictive time policies, which came in handy as late evenings turned into early mornings. Multiple guesthouses on the property meant that the couple’s entire immediate family, wedding party and closest friends could all stay on site, lending an intimate and relaxed vibe.

For their wedding day, Rachel and George wanted every element to reflect their unique sense of style and personality (which they jokingly define as “classically modern, with unexpected twists of the ridiculous”). As a result, many of the day’s elements were custom-made, several by the couple themselves. The cufflinks worn by George, and given as gifts to his groomsmen, were custom designed to reflect the couple’s love of the band Guns N’ Roses (whose initials the couple also share). George’s white tuxedo jacket was also handmade, and the interior embroidered with his name on one side and the wedding date on the other. Rachel’s custom Marchesa wedding gown was also the perfect reflection of her “classic, but untraditional” sense of style. Originally created in a plum color for Eva Longoria for the 2007 Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the dress was not initially intended to be a wedding gown at all.

Even the small details were thoughtful, custom-made reflections of the couple’s style. Rachel handmade the wedding programs and sleeves that hung over the back of the ceremony chairs, keeping the programs tidy and convenient to guests despite the breezes offered by the Hudson River. The escort cards were also designed and hand made by Rachel, incorporating the same fonts and colors to perfectly match their Vera Wang stationery suite.

The ceremony itself, which began at 5 p.m., was an inter-faith celebration of both Rachel’s Jewish heritage and George’s Catholic faith. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktails, passed hors d’oeuvres and a country table brimming with local Hudson Valley cheeses and charcuterie, all served around the property’s pool. The reception was held just a few yards away, under a spectacular tent in the grass. Following the reception, Rachel and George treated guests to an after-party in the property’s historic barn, featuring pub food and a live concert by Philadelphia-area rock band, Laura Lea and Tripp Fabulous. On Sunday, guests said their goodbyes over a poolside brunch.

Location: Locusts on Hudson, Staatsburg, NY; Catering: Oliver Kita Fine Catering, Rhinebeck, NY; Florist: Morgan’s Florist, Poughkeepsie, NY; DJ: James Mongan, JTD Productions; After-Party Entertainment: Laura Lea and Tripp Fabulous; Tent & Rentals: Events Unlimited Party Rentals, Beacon, NY; Cufflinks: WMDean; Bow Tie: Rugby Ralph Lauren; Shoes: Pour la Victoire; Hair and Makeup: Amanda Shackleton; Wedding Gown: Marchesa; Reception Dress: Anne Bowen; Photography: Jeff Tisman Photography, Kingston, NJ

We wish you countless years of happiness Rachel and George. A special thank you to Jeff Tisman of Jeff Tisman Photography for letting us share these images with our viewers!

First Look: Jean & Stephen Get Married

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

Like most people, I love a nice glass of wine, and even moreso I love a vineyard wedding in the Hamptons. Jean and Stephen’s wedding at Bedell Cellars Winery in the North Fork of Long Island, New York, is simple, yet sophisticated. I love the location complete with row upon row of grapevines and plenty of ambiance and both of Jean’s gowns. Does anyone else think she looks like Vera Wang or is it just me? The swing dance image is priceless and I am finding that photo booths are a must. I hope you enjoy this wedding as much as I did.

Jean Yang and Stephen Lesko
Married in Cutchogue, New York on July 31, 2010

Jean Yang and Stephen Lesko met one night while they were out with old college friends who happened to be dating at the time. “It wasn’t a set-up, but somehow we ended sitting next to each other and talking all night,” says Jean. “Our friends were high-fiving in the corner and patting themselves on the back. And the rest, as they say, is history!”

Steve and Jean chose to have their “first look” at the home where they got ready, before heading to Bedell Cellars Winery on the North Fork of Long Island, New York to greet their guests. Their outdoor ceremony took place under a big Oak tree, and the simplicity provided an understated elegance.

“We loved walking through the vineyards with the bridal party for some candids,” says Jean. At the same time, Anthony Jacobs from Perspective Aerials shot a video using drone aerial technology. We’re pretty sure that it’s the first aerial wedding trailer shot at 50-100 feet in the air using a drone!”

The décor incorporated flowers in red, orange, green and gold and Jean’s mom lovingly handcrafted grasshoppers hidden in the centerpieces. For the reception, Jean changed into a red party dress, pulled back her hair and put on her Jimmy Choos for her surprise swing dance with Steve.

Location: Bedell Cellars Winery, Cutchogue, NY; Cake: Peconic Baking Co., Riverhead, NY; Caterer: Catering By A Small Affair, East Quogue, NY; Florist: Karen Lenahan Designs, Sag Harbor, NY; Entertainment: Stages Band; Lighting: Matt Murphy Event Lighting, Southampton, NY; Hair and Makeup: Pam Geiger; Shoes: Jimmy Choo; Videography: Anthony Jacobs, Perspective Aerials for Afterglow Photos; Photography: Afterglow Photos, Fairfield, CT

Partnering for Life: Kristen & Collin Get Married

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

You probably already know this by now, but I love being near the water. Whether I am in my home looking out at boaters going by, on a day excursion to nearby Newport, Rhode Island, or away on business in Florida, Maine or California, the coast always lures me in.

I love Kristen and Collin’s wedding for its simple elegance. There is all of the serenity of a beachside wedding with the neutral color palette, without it being too literal. I also love the fact that they chose the Don CeSar Hotel, a.k.a. the pink palace, and didn’t fight the atmosphere, but rather complimented it with their decor choices. Add in a gorgeous gown and beautiful photography and I hope you enjoy this wedding as much as I did!

Kristen Elizabeth Marks and Collin James Breslin
Married in St. Pete Beach, Florida on October 16, 2010

Kristen Marks and Collin Breslin are what you might call true college sweethearts. They met during their freshman year at Penn State University, and after starting out as casual acquaintances, they soon found a love to last a lifetime.

Collin was first introduced to Kristen at a party and unknowingly, neither could deny the instant chemistry between the two of them. They often saw each other in passing at social events and on campus, but didn’t have a real chance to get to know one another until months after they first met. Fortunately, Collin’s fraternity and Kristen’s sorority partnered to raise money for Penn State’s THON — a philanthropy focused on combating pediatric cancer — which provided the perfect opportunity for them to spend more time with one another. After returning from a weekend of fundraising, Collin asked Kristen out on their first date and they have been together ever since.

Flash forward seven years, and Collin and Kristen were spending a summer afternoon enjoying cocktails while watching a tennis match in Washington, D.C. Afterwards, they went out to a romantic dinner in the city and then headed back to Kristen’s house in Virginia. As Collin helped Kristen out of the car, he surprised her by getting down on one knee, right in the middle of the street, and proposed. Kristen was absolutely shocked and speechless. After catching her breath and wiping away tears, she said yes.

The inspiration for their wedding was romantic elegance. To achieve that feeling at the reception, they used a soft color palette of whites, creams and golds with low lighting and lots of candlelight. Florida’s “pink palace,” also known as the Don CeSar Hotel, helped set the mood and provided a beautiful background to their fairytale evening of family, friends and love. The couple spent the next two weeks on a European honeymoon, traveling to England, France and Italy.

Lifetime Commitment: Chelsea & Omid Get Married

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

I love feeling the embrace of various cultures at weddings. While western ceremonies will always remain elegant, Indian, Chinese and Jewish ceremonies are just a few that, when captured well in wedding pictures, intrigue me. Chelsea and Omid’s Persian and western wedding ceremonies at Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Coast, California are romantic, elegant and timeless and I hope that you enjoy them as much as I did!

Chelsea McKnight and Omid Navran
Married in Newport Coast on August 14, 2010

Chelsea McKnight and Omid Navran met through a mutual friend who had kept it to herself that she thought they would be perfect together. Upon their initial meeting Chelsea and Omid thought that their time would be short lived due to college plans, but they quickly realized that they would both be attending the same college that fall: University of California, Santa Barbara.

If you ask Chelsea’s friends they will tell you that in the early days of their relationship Chelsea would casually say: “I’m pretty sure I’ll marry that guy.” Five years later that proved to be true when Omid proposed in the same town where their romance would turn into a lifetime commitment.

They decided to get married at the Pelican Hill Resort in California’s breathtaking Newport Coast. In order to honor both of their families they decided to have two ceremonies: an intimate Persian Sofreh Aghd followed by the traditional Western ceremony. Both beautiful and special in their own ways, they wouldn’t have had it any other way. Well, that is, unless you gave Omid the option of Vegas.

The day went perfectly thanks to planner Jeannie Savage. Omid’s favorite part was that, while Chelsea was able to get her vows in Farsi down pat, she seemed to have more trouble with her vows in English. Chelsea and Omid share the love of laughter, travel, hip-hop and animals. One unique aspect of their wedding was that they requested no gifts, but rather a donation to the Humane Society or Smile Train.

Lindsay & Mark Get Married

Friday, September 30th, 2011

lake como weddings

Here is a teaser for Monday’s wedding of the week on www.weddingstylemagazine.com.

Some of my favorite weddings that I have seen lately are in Italy. I am not sure if it is the photography, location, couple or all of the above, but there is just something special about them. Lindsay and Mark’s wedding at Villa del Balbianello in Lake Como, Italy is so intimate and so special. Like Lindsay said: it was love at first sight.

From the beautiful children in attendance to the couple’s dog, which stood by them at the altar, and all of the special moments in between, it is a must see. One of the reasons why I love this image so much is not because it actually says all that much, but I just feel like they might have been sneaking off and photographer Corbin Gurkin stole a moment in time on his camera. Enjoy!

Thank you so much to Corbin Gurkin of Corbin Gurkin Photography for letting us share it with you. Be sure to look out for the full feature on Monday. Have a great weekend!

The Right Kind of Love: Sarah & Stephen Get Married

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Everyone always asks me why I choose weddings and my answer is always a very vague, but distinct: it has to give me a feeling; the photography has to be strong. And I think that Sarah and Stephen’s wedding in the hill country of Austin, Texas and photographed by Amelia Tarbet, does just that.

Oddly enough, I was speaking with an employee yesterday and we got to talking about a different kind of love, a special kind of love, where you can just see the way the couple looks at each other (sometimes without even knowing it). I think every woman and man wants to be loved that way. While Sarah and Stephen might win the kissing award, every look, every stolen smooch, evokes that feeling. I hope you enjoy this wedding as much as I did.

Sarah Kirchhofer and Stephen Dearnley Schoeffel
Married in Austin, Texas on July 17, 2010

Sarah Kirchhofer is from Dallas, Texas and Steve Schoeffel is from Charlottesville, Virginia. They met while attending Duke University where they both played lacrosse. “We had quite a few mutual friends,” says Sarah. “We both went to the same Christian ministry for athletes, and toward the end of college, found ourselves spending more and more time together.” But it wasn’t until Sarah’s last semester—Stephen was a year behind her—that the two started dating.

From then on, much of the relationship was spent long distance with Sarah was working in Washington, D.C., and Stephen finishing school. Weekend visits, summer weddings and family vacations were some of the only times that they were able to see each other in person. Come the fall of Stephen’s last year at Duke, he and Sarah, along with a number of their friends, were planning to be in Charlottesville for a long weekend. “It seemed the perfect time to propose,” says Stephen.

Earlier in the year, “my grandparents had given me a gorgeous engagement ring that had been in the family for multiple generations,” describes Stephen. “I had gotten it sized up and had been able to sit down with Sarah’s dad about a month before.” So, right before dusk that Friday in October, Stephen and Sarah hiked to a spot up on the Blue Ridge Mountains, close to Sarah’s parent’s home. Once at the top, “we sat enjoying some wine and food and took in the view of the entire valley. Although there wasn’t a perfect—or even visible—sunset,” smiles Stephen, “the proposal couldn’t have gone better.”

In planning the wedding, Sarah and Stephen wanted something that had elegance without being overly formal, so they decided on Austin as opposed to Dallas because “Austin seemed to offer more personality and a unique feel. Austin has such a fun atmosphere and vibe, and we were drawn to some of the hill country venues slightly outside of the city. We loved the idea of an outdoor wedding and despite the extreme summer heat, we went for it!” says Sarah. And, right on cue, it was incredibly hot, but things cooled off a bit for the reception and “we had an incredible time dancing with friends and enjoying the night,” says Sarah and Stephen. Afterwards they honeymooned in Costa Rica and also spent a week driving up the Pacific Coast Highway in California, staying in little bed and breakfasts along the way.

Location: Flat Creek Estate Winery & Vineyard, Marble Falls, TX; Event Planner: BZ Events, Austin, TX; Band: Ice House Band, Austin, TX; Bridesmaids Dresses and Groomsmen Attire: J. Crew; Wedding Gown: Elizabeth Fillmore; Photography: Amelia Tarbet Photography, Austin, TX

Jennifer Woo and Cristian Baidal Sequeira
Married in Costa Rica on March 19, 2011

Jennifer Woo and Cristian Baidal Sequeira met in Costa Rica in 2007 while Jennifer was completing a rotation in rural medicine and nutrition as a medical student. At the time, Cristian had recently returned to his native Costa Rica after obtaining his master’s degree in linguistics with plans to move back to France to complete his Ph.D. work. The two met through mutual acquaintances and quickly came to appreciate each other’s large hearts and giving nature. After spending every free minute together and traveling throughout much of the country, Jennifer felt as though she was in the middle of a fairytale romance.

After surviving Jennifer’s long-distance internship, Cristian secured a position at the Lycee International just down the street from where Jennifer worked and decided to move to Los Angeles to be with her. Two years later, Cristian proposed over dinner at a Beverly Hills restaurant.

In the midst of their wedding planning, the two relocated to Boston to pursue work opportunities. Having missed their friends and families so much after the move, they wanted to have an intimate wedding weekend where everyone from the U.S., Costa Rica and France (who mean so much to them) could finally come together and spend quality time together. The result: a modern beach setting with a relaxed, cozy atmosphere. Jennifer surprised Cristian with a fireworks finale to the wedding, marking the start of the rest of their lives together. The couple spent their honeymoon in the rainforest on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica.

Soul and Substance: Anjhula & Satish Get Married

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

I wanted to share this video today because it doesn’t just show a love story, it feels like a mini movie. Although both Anjhula and Satish are very private people and did not even allow cameras at their wedding, they have agreed to let us share their video with you because they are so happy with the finished product. They both feel that great art must be shared with the world, and “every time I see the video, it stirs my soul,” says Anjhula.

Anjhula Mya Singh Bais & Satish Selvanathan
Married in Rajasthan, India on October 21, 2010 – October 24, 2010

Once upon a time and four years ago in central London, a chance meeting took place. The protagonists in this story — a tall and handsome Sri Lankan and a lovely and passionate Rajput Princess — met at a dinner party planned by their two Greek friends from university. As the only non-Greeks at this dinner, the two started talking. Fast forward two years, and both were studying at Columbia University in New York, enjoying lunches on campus and numerous late night slices of pizza following business school socials.

As a model, Anjhula has had the opportunity to shoot with the best photographers around the world. Every vendor and detail of her wedding was meticulously chosen, taking into account the talent that each person would be able to provide, making her wedding day perfect. Anjhula selected Yaro from CoutureCinema because he takes his craft very seriously. Anjhula notes: “Everyone does a video which captures the events sequentially and monotonously. Yaro and I created a film, cinema, magic. It is visual art.”

Anjhula’s family hails from Banswara in Rajasthan, India. To preserve the traditions and customs passed down through her family for centuries, they felt that the ideal backdrop would have to be the Royal Palace. Their guests (from more than 28 countries, which included royalty, Bollywood actors, athletes, and heads of state) had their luggage ferried in upon royal armory and camels. Upon arrival, each guest was presented with a kurta or saree to wear at functions, and left with silver coins. In regal fashion, their guests resided in air-conditioned tents in the desert and enjoyed access to hookah lounges day and night. A friendly game of elephant polo served as the ice breaker event on the first day. On the second day, their friends from around the world performed to Bollywood numbers and white-gloved waiters served them a sit-down dinner on silver during the reception. Come the wedding day, Satish arrived on an elephant bedecked with precious jewels and carrying a 100-year-old sword.

The couple decided to forsake gifts and instead asked their guests to contribute to their chosen charities. Everything from the flowers to the tents were locally and organically sourced, helping the local economy where the majority of people live below the poverty line. Even though there was pressure to import flowers and use a fountain, they opted to not have a carbon footprint and thought about the persistent water shortage and said no to both. With that spirit, Anjhula believes that “you know you have found the right person when you’re not so busy looking at each other, but rather in the same direction.”

Cinematography: CoutureCinema, Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA; Location: Royal Palace, Banswara, Rajasthan, India; Music: Rajasthan Roots; Anjhula’s Jewelry: Gem Palace; Satish’s Suit: Designed by the royal prince, his highness Raghuvendra Rathore; Photographers: Akash Das, Rahul Dutta, Cimmaron Singh

We wish you countless years of happiness Anjhula and Satish and a big thank you to Yaroslav Kofman of CoutureCinema for letting us share this video with our viewers!
