Villa Scanti

GO: What is your unique role when it comes to a couple’s wedding day and how does your property distinguish a couple’s experience as opposed to getting married somewhere else?
SB
:
I am a part of the process from day one. I am involved in every meeting which takes place on the property. The vendors come to the Villa to understand the perfect choreography that takes place during the course of the event so that it plays out exactly to the bride and grooms specifications. I am present during the entire event at every event. The most important thing for me is for the bride, groom and their families to have had an exceptional experience that is like none other, full of beautiful romantic memories. Villa Sancti is a special place where anyone who enters the gardens can sense the abundant life and love that resides here. The sophisticated European gardens, gorgeous ocean and canyon vista at sunset are added bonuses.

GO: From start to finish, what can a couple expect if they choose to get married at your property?
SB: Couples can expect nonstop support and communication from me from the planning stages till they’re driving off for their honeymoon. I try to make their special day as stress free for the bride, groom and their families as possible. Along with the property we have a large variety of extras that couples can choose from to add to their wedding. I take great pride in the property and I am there for every wedding to make sure that everything goes off without a hitch.

GO: If you had to describe your property in three words, what would they be?
SB: Gorgeous, Breathtaking and Warm!

GO: Do you have areas where a couple can elect to take their wedding pictures at your property?
SB: We have access to the beach; there are ocean views from all areas of the villa. Also, the gorgeous canyon views and sunsets complete with fountains, arched trellis with flowers framed by the ocean. And you can’t forget about our breathtaking rose gardens, zen garden and avenue garden.

GO: Do you have customizable packages? Tell me a little bit about them?
SB: All of our packages are custom.
Silver Package is for those who only want to rent the venue and want to take care of all the planning
Gold Package is for those who want to rent the venue but use my experienced vendors and some guidance
Platinum Package is for those who want to just show up and have every detail taken care of so they can be the honored guests

GO: Food is such an important element at a wedding; tell me about your menus/culinary team?
SB: I work with a consortium of gourmet chefs and caterers that can suite every budget. Large or small parties, formal or casual dining is all available.

GO: What is the first thing a couple should do if they are interested in getting married at your property?
SB: They should email me, susan@susanburger.com and set up a site visit ASAP!

GO: Does your property have any unique features that you would like us to share with our readers?
SB: Yes, please visit Villasancti.com. There are two photo albums with over 300 photos under the “Albums” tab. In addition to our venue we also offer our own proprietary chocolates as guest favors that can be monogramed with the bride and groom monogram in gold dust. We also offer silk sheets with monogram in 4 rich colors.

Thank you Susan for giving us a look into your beautiful lush gardens at Villa Sancti Di Bella Vista!

Common Roots: Lorena & Ricardo Get Married

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

When I first saw Lorena and Ricardo’s wedding, I was blown away by the cultural, multi-part event. From their ceremony in the grand church in downtown Oaxaca, Mexico, to when they paraded the streets in a procession, the photos against the old building facades, the amazing reception venue for their intimate party, to the spiritual ceremony at the end … it seemed like an amazing celebration of both the couple and their commitment to one another. There is always something special about destination weddings and I find something particularly authentic about ones that take place in Mexico. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Felicitaciones!

Lorena Droba and Ricardo Rodriguez
Married in Oaxaca, Mexico on March 14, 2010

Lorena Droba and Ricardo Rodriguez met while working on Wall Street. They became good friends, but the fast-paced lifestyle only allowed them to see a certain side of each other. It wasn’t until they got away from it all (on a trip that they had originally planned with friends) to explore the rainforests and Caribbean coast of Ricardo’s home country, Nicaragua, that they saw their common roots and family values. It was love in paradise! They realized that their lives had much more in common than their city life, and their deep friendship blossomed into something so much more.

They were married in Lorena’s birth city of Oaxaca, Mexico. It was the perfect old world setting, where indigenous, pre-Colombian and colonial influences converge. Romantic cobblestone streets, cascading bougainvilleas, ancient monasteries with fading original frescoes, and bubbling fountains in moonlit courtyards were just a few of the inspirations for their fairytale wedding. The wedding emphasized both of their cultures with folkloric dancers and musicians, traditional rituals, famous Oaxacan cuisine, and favors made by local craftsmen and artisans.

We wish you countless years of happiness Lorena and Ricardo and a big thank you to Tande Di-Lanatta of Di-Lanatta’s Photography for letting us share this with our viewers!

Wet Noses: Pet Portraits as Gifts

Friday, October 7th, 2011

There is not much to say. People love their pets. And while I don’t have one … yet (yet being the key word here), I can totally appreciate how their wet noses, priceless expressions and big personalities can make a lasting impression on your heart. So much so, that when perfectly posed and outfitted for a photo shoot, the results can make a priceless gift for the couple that already has, well, everything.

Growing up with a pet herself, photographer Ellen Shershow Peña understands “the amazing relationship that exists between people and their dogs. A dog can transform two people into a family,” says the owner of San Francisco, California-based J’adore Le Chien. While her English Springer Marble is no longer here, she “was a treasured member of our family; she was loving and super fun and hilarious and cool,” says Shershow Peña, who captures any dog’s personality in her portraits to create works of art that can be treasured for a lifetime.

Certain that she has “the best job ever,” Shershow Peña is honoring a tradition that dates as far back as 900 B.C., “when ancient Egyptians paid tribute to their pets by mummifying and painting them along with their human owners.” Translating this tradition into a more contemporary execution, Shershow Peña draws inspiration from the past, but tries to make her images about “dogs as fashion icons.”

Shershow Peña believes that her portraits make a “particularly great gift for newlyweds because they are often looking for ways to decorate their home. When I create a portrait of your dog,” she continues, “I am not just taking pictures; I am creating an art piece. In fact, you should expect to walk away with several pieces of fine art that will adorn your home for many years.” Some of her most popular products include art gallery wraps and her latest offering of metal prints, while her personal favorite remains gallery blocks. Other options also include portfolio boxes and itty bitty purse books.

Whether you are secretly scheming the photo shoot to have the art in hand at a wedding or presenting the happy couple with the gift of the photo shoot and art, either can make for a memorable gift that will adorn your walls and be sure to serve as a conversation piece for all of your house guests for years to come.

How To Prepare Your Dog For A Photo Shoot

Q: How should I prepare my dog for the photo shoot?
A: Plan to take your dog for a good walk right before the shoot, and you’ll also want to bring your dog hungry as we use small treats during the course of the shoot.

Q: Should I get my dog groomed?
A: Grooming is a personal decision. You know how your dog will look his or her best, but if you do choose to have your dog groomed, we recommend you have that done a day or two before the sitting rather than on the same day as your sitting. A grooming and a portrait sitting on the same day can be a lot of stress for many dogs.

Q: Is there anything I should bring?
A: Bring your dog’s favorite treat, cut up into very small pieces if necessary.

Q: Can I get a picture for my website/Facebook page?
A: Yes. Your sitting includes 5 complimentary, screen-resolution files for use on your personal website, blog, and social networking sites.

Q: Can I purchase hi-res files and make my own prints?
A: No, and here’s why: When you book with Ellen Shershow Peña, you should expect to walk away with several pieces of fine art. We employ stringent fine art printing practices and use an exclusive photo lab that adheres to exacting processing standards and only accepts professional photographers as clients. Ellen will personally inspect every single image before it leaves the studio to ensure that it is perfect in every way. We do this with the expectation that our clients will enjoy these fine art prints for years to come.

Q: When do I get to see my images?
A: Once our photo shoot wraps, Ellen will spend 3-4 weeks processing your images. This is often the most labor intensive part of the process because we want to make sure every image is absolutely perfect.

Q: When will my finished prints be ready?
A: Your finished prints will be ready 4 to 6 weeks after your print order consultation. During the holidays we make every effort to compress this schedule to accommodate holiday cards and gifts.

Q: Can I re-order at a later date?
A: We archive and manage your images in perpetuity so that you will be able to re-order images at your convenience.

Q: How long will I be at the studio?
A: Plan on spending 1-2 hours.

Q: My dog is aggressive. Will there be other dogs there?
A: We schedule portrait sessions with plenty of time in between so that animals that don’t know each other do not meet. We therefore ask that you arrive on time and not early for your appointment. Please make us aware of any aggression issues your animal may have so that we can be sensitive to those concerns.

Q: My dog is nervous/afraid of flash/won’t sit still/not trained/etc. will that be a problem?
A: It won’t be a problem, and we will have a chance to chat before the photo shoot about all of these issues. During this chat, Ellen will ask if your dog knows a sit, a stay and/or a watch. Ellen understands that some dogs have special needs, some have fears of being in a new place with a light that keeps flashing. In fact, this is why sessions are scheduled for 1-2 hours, as some dogs need a little more time to feel comfortable. Bear in mind that when you first come to your photo session, we won’t start photographing immediately. Instead, Ellen and your dog will spend a little time getting to know each other. Your dog will have a chance to sniff out the space and get comfortable in a photo shoot environment.

Q: Whats the deal with all the accessories on the images? Does my dog have to wear a tiara?
A: There is no set number of outfit or accessory changes as, in essence, your dog will decide how much or how little he or she will wear. Some dogs love to dress up, they want to wear pearls and silks and tiaras and be generally fabulous. Others prefer a cleaner look, one perfect accessory, or no accessories, is the path to perfection

Q: What if I have to reschedule?
A: Should you need to reschedule, we ask for one week’s notice prior to your scheduled portrait appointment. A $50 rescheduling fee will be applied for reschedules with less than one week’s notice.

Q: Can you come to my house and take pictures?
A: Most of our portraits sittings take place in the studio where we have optimum control over lighting, setting and distractions. Travel to your house may be set up by special arrangement. Additional travel fees apply.

Q: What if I want a free photo shoot? Do you ever do that?
A: Well, no, not really, but if you can get Jill Zarin’s dog Ginger into my studio for a shoot, then, yes, your shoot is free. Seriously. Free. Also: I will be your best friend.

A special thank you to all of our four-legged subjects and thank you so much Ellen Shershow Peña of J’adore Le Chien for sharing these amazing images with us!

Lifetime Commitment: Chelsea & Omid Get Married

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

I love feeling the embrace of various cultures at weddings. While western ceremonies will always remain elegant, Indian, Chinese and Jewish ceremonies are just a few that, when captured well in wedding pictures, intrigue me. Chelsea and Omid’s Persian and western wedding ceremonies at Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Coast, California are romantic, elegant and timeless and I hope that you enjoy them as much as I did!

Chelsea McKnight and Omid Navran
Married in Newport Coast on August 14, 2010

Chelsea McKnight and Omid Navran met through a mutual friend who had kept it to herself that she thought they would be perfect together. Upon their initial meeting Chelsea and Omid thought that their time would be short lived due to college plans, but they quickly realized that they would both be attending the same college that fall: University of California, Santa Barbara.

If you ask Chelsea’s friends they will tell you that in the early days of their relationship Chelsea would casually say: “I’m pretty sure I’ll marry that guy.” Five years later that proved to be true when Omid proposed in the same town where their romance would turn into a lifetime commitment.

They decided to get married at the Pelican Hill Resort in California’s breathtaking Newport Coast. In order to honor both of their families they decided to have two ceremonies: an intimate Persian Sofreh Aghd followed by the traditional Western ceremony. Both beautiful and special in their own ways, they wouldn’t have had it any other way. Well, that is, unless you gave Omid the option of Vegas.

The day went perfectly thanks to planner Jeannie Savage. Omid’s favorite part was that, while Chelsea was able to get her vows in Farsi down pat, she seemed to have more trouble with her vows in English. Chelsea and Omid share the love of laughter, travel, hip-hop and animals. One unique aspect of their wedding was that they requested no gifts, but rather a donation to the Humane Society or Smile Train.

Lindsay & Mark Get Married

lake como weddings

Here is a teaser for Monday’s wedding of the week on www.weddingstylemagazine.com.

Some of my favorite weddings that I have seen lately are in Italy. I am not sure if it is the photography, location, couple or all of the above, but there is just something special about them. Lindsay and Mark’s wedding at Villa del Balbianello in Lake Como, Italy is so intimate and so special. Like Lindsay said: it was love at first sight.

From the beautiful children in attendance to the couple’s dog, which stood by them at the altar, and all of the special moments in between, it is a must see. One of the reasons why I love this image so much is not because it actually says all that much, but I just feel like they might have been sneaking off and photographer Corbin Gurkin stole a moment in time on his camera. Enjoy!

Thank you so much to Corbin Gurkin of Corbin Gurkin Photography for letting us share it with you. Be sure to look out for the full feature on Monday. Have a great weekend!

Jennifer Woo and Cristian Baidal Sequeira
Married in Costa Rica on March 19, 2011

Jennifer Woo and Cristian Baidal Sequeira met in Costa Rica in 2007 while Jennifer was completing a rotation in rural medicine and nutrition as a medical student. At the time, Cristian had recently returned to his native Costa Rica after obtaining his master’s degree in linguistics with plans to move back to France to complete his Ph.D. work. The two met through mutual acquaintances and quickly came to appreciate each other’s large hearts and giving nature. After spending every free minute together and traveling throughout much of the country, Jennifer felt as though she was in the middle of a fairytale romance.

After surviving Jennifer’s long-distance internship, Cristian secured a position at the Lycee International just down the street from where Jennifer worked and decided to move to Los Angeles to be with her. Two years later, Cristian proposed over dinner at a Beverly Hills restaurant.

In the midst of their wedding planning, the two relocated to Boston to pursue work opportunities. Having missed their friends and families so much after the move, they wanted to have an intimate wedding weekend where everyone from the U.S., Costa Rica and France (who mean so much to them) could finally come together and spend quality time together. The result: a modern beach setting with a relaxed, cozy atmosphere. Jennifer surprised Cristian with a fireworks finale to the wedding, marking the start of the rest of their lives together. The couple spent their honeymoon in the rainforest on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica.

Location: Reserva Conchal, Costa Rica; Cake: Victoria Zoch, Costa Rica; Event Design and Planner: Tropical Occasions, Costa Rica; Rentals: Costa Mesa, Costa Rica; Ceremony Music: Typical Costa Rican Trio; DJ and Lighting: Cabo Luna Event Rentals, Costa Rica; Fireworks: FAISA of Costa Rica; Hair and Makeup: Diego Alfarro; Photography: Michael Segal Photography, Santa Monica and Palm Springs, CA

We wish you countless years of happiness Jennifer and Cristian. A special thank you to Michael Segal of Michael Segal Photography for letting us share these images with our viewers!

Soul and Substance: Anjhula & Satish Get Married

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

I wanted to share this video today because it doesn’t just show a love story, it feels like a mini movie. Although both Anjhula and Satish are very private people and did not even allow cameras at their wedding, they have agreed to let us share their video with you because they are so happy with the finished product. They both feel that great art must be shared with the world, and “every time I see the video, it stirs my soul,” says Anjhula.

Anjhula Mya Singh Bais & Satish Selvanathan
Married in Rajasthan, India on October 21, 2010 – October 24, 2010

Once upon a time and four years ago in central London, a chance meeting took place. The protagonists in this story — a tall and handsome Sri Lankan and a lovely and passionate Rajput Princess — met at a dinner party planned by their two Greek friends from university. As the only non-Greeks at this dinner, the two started talking. Fast forward two years, and both were studying at Columbia University in New York, enjoying lunches on campus and numerous late night slices of pizza following business school socials.

As a model, Anjhula has had the opportunity to shoot with the best photographers around the world. Every vendor and detail of her wedding was meticulously chosen, taking into account the talent that each person would be able to provide, making her wedding day perfect. Anjhula selected Yaro from CoutureCinema because he takes his craft very seriously. Anjhula notes: “Everyone does a video which captures the events sequentially and monotonously. Yaro and I created a film, cinema, magic. It is visual art.”

Anjhula’s family hails from Banswara in Rajasthan, India. To preserve the traditions and customs passed down through her family for centuries, they felt that the ideal backdrop would have to be the Royal Palace. Their guests (from more than 28 countries, which included royalty, Bollywood actors, athletes, and heads of state) had their luggage ferried in upon royal armory and camels. Upon arrival, each guest was presented with a kurta or saree to wear at functions, and left with silver coins. In regal fashion, their guests resided in air-conditioned tents in the desert and enjoyed access to hookah lounges day and night. A friendly game of elephant polo served as the ice breaker event on the first day. On the second day, their friends from around the world performed to Bollywood numbers and white-gloved waiters served them a sit-down dinner on silver during the reception. Come the wedding day, Satish arrived on an elephant bedecked with precious jewels and carrying a 100-year-old sword.

The couple decided to forsake gifts and instead asked their guests to contribute to their chosen charities. Everything from the flowers to the tents were locally and organically sourced, helping the local economy where the majority of people live below the poverty line. Even though there was pressure to import flowers and use a fountain, they opted to not have a carbon footprint and thought about the persistent water shortage and said no to both. With that spirit, Anjhula believes that “you know you have found the right person when you’re not so busy looking at each other, but rather in the same direction.”

Cinematography: CoutureCinema, Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA; Location: Royal Palace, Banswara, Rajasthan, India; Music: Rajasthan Roots; Anjhula’s Jewelry: Gem Palace; Satish’s Suit: Designed by the royal prince, his highness Raghuvendra Rathore; Photographers: Akash Das, Rahul Dutta, Cimmaron Singh

We wish you countless years of happiness Anjhula and Satish and a big thank you to Yaroslav Kofman of CoutureCinema for letting us share this video with our viewers!

The Decision Was Made: Wendy & Randy Get Married

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Just because you’re getting married for a second time or a little later in life, it is no reason not to have a wedding and celebrate your love. My only recommendation is to forgo the ballgown wedding dress and opt for a simpler silhouette. I love Wendy and Randy’s wedding for its simplicity and elegance. Her choice to wear a stylish chocolate brown dress and his for a suit was spot on and aside from loving the Four Seasons, the couple’s choice to marry in the library, is seemingly perfect. The only thing that makes this wedding sweeter is Jana Morgan’s amazing photography. Enjoy!

Wendy Burkholder and Randy Bergsrud
Married in Lana’i City, Hawaii on February 25, 2011

As corporate executives, Wendy Burkholder and Randy Bergsrud both have very hectic schedules that involve a great deal of traveling. As fate would have it, this is actually how they met: on an Aloha Airlines flight back in 2006. As their work takes them to every island in Hawaii—with the exception of Lana’i—The Lodge at Koele became their respite and a place for them to disconnect from their busy lives. Easily accessible by ferry from their home in Maui, it is a serene setting that invites one to slow down and drink in the breathtakingly beautiful surroundings.

Wendy and Randy had been thinking about getting married for some time, but couldn’t seem to settle on a venue, “Nothing we had discussed felt right,” says Wendy, but one thing was certain: “Neither of us had the time, nor the desire, to devote to planning a complicated affair,” adds Wendy, explaining how they were determined to keep things simple, yet elegant. During a mid-summer getaway to The Lodge at Koele last year, they were sitting on the lanai and enjoying the languid late afternoon when Wendy turned to Randy and said, “Here. Right here, in the Library.” Randy immediately understood what Wendy meant, and the decision was made.

They connected with the resort’s planner, Lacy Colley, who, in turn, coordinated all of the details with their choice of florist, officiant and photographer—each of whom were “outstanding,” says Wendy. “We basically just had to show up on the evening of 25th in the appropriate attire! The Library was warm and welcoming, with the fireplace lit and candles everywhere. The dinner was sumptuous, the setting opulent, yet tasteful, and the staff ’s attention to detail was over the top.” Their immediate families from the mainland made the trip to Lana’i to share in their joy, and everyone, including Wendy and Randy, “had an unforgettable evening. It was everything, and more, we had hoped for.”

Location, Cake and Caterer: Four Seasons Resort Lana’i, The Lodge at Koele, Lana’i City, HI; Floral Design: Anny Heid Flowers, Makawao, HI; Reverend: Judge Rhonda Loo; Photography: Jana Morgan Photography, San Diego, CA and Honolulu, HI

We wish you countless years of happiness Wendy and Randy. A very special thank you to Anny Heid of Anny Heid Flowers and Jana Morgan of Jana Morgan Photography for letting us share these images with our viewers!
