Inside Scoop on Planning A Wedding at The St. Regis San Francisco, California

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

In a city of inimitable grace, style, and culture, The St. Regis San Francisco is a bespoke luxury hotel that embodies a new chapter of extraordinary hospitality in the most distinctive of urban settings: the vibrant SOMA district. Fusing a historic building with a 40-story tower and the Museum of the African Diaspora. The St. Regis San Francisco presents a refined, modern interpretation of The St. Regis legacy, informed by their elegant Muse Boardroom, glass-walled Gallery Ballroom, and premier service. After getting to know the staff at The St. Regis San Francisco we were able to chat about planning a wedding at The St. Regis.

St. Regis San FranciscoGO: What is your unique role when it comes to a couple’s wedding day and how does your property distinguish a couple’s experience as opposed to getting married somewhere else?
BP: Though we highly recommend a bride and groom work with an event planner, if for whatever reason they decide not to go down that road, we take care of all their wedding needs that occur on property. And if they have a planner on property, all the same things apply—it’s as if they have double the help. We help develop their timeline and walk them through the entire process from the moment they sign their contract to the moment they leave the event, cake top and guest book in hand. We feel that a couple isn’t just buying are hotel as a venue; they are buying us. I always tell couples they have 3 decisions to make, venue, planner, photographer. You have to hit a home run and experience an emotional connection with each, especially in luxury environments.

GO: From start to finish, what can a couple expect if they choose to get married at your property?
BP: The couple can expect 24/7 access to the person they are working with—frantic late night phone calls and all. Rest assured, we will caution you, reason with you about what’s doable and what isn’t but still keep it custom and keep it yours.

GO: If you had to describe your property in three words, what would they be?
BP: Contemporary, Flawless and Refined!

GO: What are the unique locations that a couple can host their ceremony and reception at in your venue?
BP: Bringing bespoke luxury and hospitality to the City by the Bay, The St. Regis San Francisco serves as a stylish location for romantic wedding celebrations, from festive rehearsal dinners to memorably elegant ceremonies and receptions. The St. Regis Hotel San Francisco offers couples an array of customized wedding options. Whether it is a grand reception in the Gallery Ballroom, welcoming up to 400 guests with its soaring wall of glass, or an outdoor roof top ceremony on the Yerba Buena Terrace, every celebration is characterized by The St. Regis’ personalized service and meticulous attention to detail.

GO: Do you have areas where a couple can elect to take their wedding pictures at your property?
BP: We do stress that only couples that have weddings in the hotel can use our public space for photography. The most photographed space is perhaps our rose petal wall by Pascale Girardin, along with the Gallery Ballroom’s frosted glass windows—a bride’s glamorous dress juxtaposed against these architectural details makes for an amazing shot. The overlook terrace with bamboo gardens is also often photographed for couples seeking an outdoor feel.

GO: Do you have customizable packages? Tell me a little bit about them?
BP: Every wedding we do here is customized. Couples will work from our collections of seasonal menus to design a food and beverage event that is customized. We listen to each couple to design something that is specific to their wants and needs. We even work with the Executive Chef to blend cultural flavors into the menu.

GO: Food is such an important element at a wedding; tell me about your menus/culinary team?
BP: A culinary team led by Exectuive Chef Romuald Feger will create a customized menu specific to each couple. Seasonal menu items like Sonoma Duck Confit and Organic Fingerling Potato Hash and Wild Halibut Filet Wrapped in Squash Blossom have been used in the past. Feger’s career spans 15 years of haute cuisine experience and training in some of the world’s leading restaurants and hotels. Whatever the choice, our custom menus are seasonal and organic, with an emphasis on food design.

GO: What is the first thing a couple should do if they are interested in getting married at your property?
BP: First and foremost, they should ask themselves if they could picture getting married at The St. Regis and having their event at our hotel. Couples should visit several venues before settling on one to ensure the best fit. Couples must feel a connection to that property—they’ll live with this memory for the rest of their lives. At The St. Regis San Francisco, we want to create clients for life. We want couples to return for special events, birthdays, baby showers, etc. That is our philosophy.

GO: Does your property have any unique features (i.e. wedding website) that you would like us to share with our readers?
BP: The St. Regis San Francisco also provides exquisite dining ware, such as Vera Wang Wedgwood china, Christofle silver, Spiegelau crystal stemware and custom Italian linens from Rivolta Carmignani. We understand and respect that couples invest a lot of love and money in bringing their event to our hotel. In return, they will have a dedicated team of people who will strive to create the perfect day for them. We take on one wedding a day in order to ensure that our team is focused solely on one event. You’ll always feel like you’re being pampered here, and I think that is truly distinguishes us.

Sin City Engagement Party

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

While Las Vegas may not be for everyone, I personally love the lights, the glitz, the glam … the slot machines. Ashley and Matthew celebrated their engagement in Sin City’s renown Ghostbar at the Palms Casino Resort before their wedding at the nearby Four Seasons Hotel. If there is one thing you can count on Las Vegas for, it is a good time and it looks like they had just that. Stay tuned to see their wedding later this week; it is pretty posh. Enjoy!

Love is Sweet: Katy & Jarrod Get Married

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Sometimes more is too much, sometimes more is perfect and sometimes, well sometimes less is more. One of the things that I like best about Katy and Jarrod’s Big Sur wedding is its simple elegance. I love all of the shimmer paired with the casual feel of the outdoor setting. I love her Monique Lhuillier gown with its sexy back, and all of the little things like their dog being part of the ceremony, Katy’s mom helping collect pieces for their wedding and the bench picture (be sure to read their story to find out why this is so much better than it sounds).

Perhaps some of the best romances do start out of friendships. What do you think? Either way, I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Katy Kunkel and Jarrod Muenter
Married in Big Sur, California on May 30

Katy Kunkel and Jarrod Muenter met while they were living in the same dorm and playing water polo together at UC Santa Barbara. “I was unaware of Jarrod’s interest in me for about the first year of hanging out,” says Katy admitting that she naively considered them to just be “really good friends.” A short time later, while the duo was on a failed SCUBA diving trip, Katy realized that Jarrod had feelings for her when she “had to cut him out of kelp.”

They always had so much fun together and “once I realized what a great guy I had on my hands, there was no way I was letting him go,” divulges Katy. “We’ve been inseparable ever since.” After graduating they traveled for the next nine months and “figured if we can handle each other 24 hours a day, seven days a week for that long of a time period,” say Katy, then “we have a pretty good chance of making it work.”

The proposal came the day after Christmas when Jarrod gave Katy her present first, but made her wait to open the card. “After a long and thoughtful note, at the bottom of the card was the sentence: ‘I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to ask you to marry me right now.’” Jarrod then awkwardly stumbled over packages under the tree and get down on one knee. “It was very endearing and very Jarrod,” shares Katy.

“We chose Big Sur for our wedding because of our love of the area and the time we spend hiking and camping there. It’s such a unique and beautiful place and we wanted to share our love of it with our family and friends on our wedding day,” says Katy. But, six months into the planning, they were informed that their favorite venue was closing due to a fire and they were faced with having to find a new location. Fortunately, fate led them to the perfect spot: a secluded, private property nestled into the rugged Big Sur cliffs, “literally just feet above the water,” says Katy.

Katy’s eye for art and innate sense of style proved to perfectly compliment the naturally beautiful setting. With a color palette of magenta, pewter and nude the stage was set for an incredible evening. “Mercury glass vases, crystal chandeliers and numerous varieties of local succulents all helped to achieve the perfect eclectic blend of elegance and nature,” notes Katy, whose mother had collected decorative pieces from all over in the time leading up to the wedding, adding to the artistic flare.

After a beach photo shoot, the couple arrived to their wedding in style via Katy’s step-father’s fully-restored Woody. Another personal touch was when Jarrod was escorted down the aisle by the couple’s dog, Sam, who was the acting ring bearer. Harp music played the couple’s favorite Ben Harper song as Katy strolled down the aisle in her Monique Lhuillier gown and Rene Caovilla shoes. The non-denomenational ceremony was presided over by Reverend Brian Lyke.

Afterwards, Katy and Jarrod stole a private moment away from their guests: seated alone and overlooking the ocean, they shared a toast on a bench that Jarrod spent months hand carving as a surprise wedding gift for Katy. A family-style meal ensued, which incorporated the couple’s “favorite tastes” of the California coast. Following dinner, the Money Band performed old school rock tunes and everyone danced under the stars. Then, as the evening quieted down, they all gathered to enjoy cordials and S’mores by the fire.

Katy and Jarrod honeymooned for three weeks along the coast of Croatia. After celebrating the start of their news lives together, they are also happy to remember how it all began. “We’re lucky to have built our relationship on a strong foundation of friendship, honesty and trust in one another. I don’t know if there really could be a better match for me out there; it just feels right when we’re together,” smiles Katy.

Mariachi Love: Analee & Brian Get Married

Friday, January 27th, 2012

It’s a rainy Friday and I thought that this Costa Mesa wedding filmed by the fabulous John Goolsby of Godfather Films was such an appropriate video to share to uplift my spirit a bit. This couple has so much energy and clearly shares so much love for one another. I love the vibe of their wedding, the masks at the reception and both of Analee’s gowns are beautiful. I hope you like it as much as I did. Enjoy!

Brian Gomez & Analee Almeida-Gomez
Married in Costa Mesa, California on November 26, 2011

Both being from Hispanic decent, we always dreamed of having a big wedding to be able to share with our entire family and friends. Celebrations by Turnip Rose was the perfect venue for us, we were going for more of a modern look with an elegant touch, Celebrations had all of this and more! The bride knew exactly how she wanted the venue decorated, she looked to her mother that has had many years of experience servicing luxury weddings in Mexico through her own independent business. A traditional Catholic wedding, we had a mariachi band at the ceremony and the reception which gave it an authentic touch, the white glove catering company put on a little show while they brought out the main entrée. We even had “The crazy hour” which consisted of providing our guests with masquerade themed masks while dancing to upbeat salsa and reggae songs for about an hour. Until this day, we get Facebook messages from friends of friends that have seen the video online and want to incorporate some of the ideas that we had in our wedding for their upcoming weddings. We feel very blessed that we were able to work with such amazing vendors that not only provided quality work but made you cherish every moment of that special day!

Butterfly Bridal Shower

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

When it comes to bridal showers, I love it when they are executed with style and elegance and this butterfly bridal shower was right on target. I like to pick a theme and run with it — showing taste and restraint, of course. Something I like in particular about this shower was the absence of hokey games replaced by more contemporary ideas like “Guess the Spice?” and the Make a Bouquet Contest.

I hope you enjoy these ideas as much as I did and be sure to stay tuned next week to see Sandra’s over-the-top wedding!

Sandra Thomasian has had an obsession with butterflies since she was a little girl, so when she got engaged and the time came for her shower it only made sense to have a butterfly-themed bridal shower. Sandra’s sister (the girl in the fabulous lavender dress) threw it for her and from the butterfly arch to the table décor, cake, the floating installation in the pool, the wrapping on the presents, the butterfly place cards that perched on the mimosas, and more, everything had to follow the butterfly theme. “What made my event so special was the attention to detail and the vibrant colors,” says Sandra.

Thank you so much for letting us share your bridal shower Sandra and a big thank you to Lilit Khatchaturian of Sky Events & Production for your amazing work and Reel Light Pictures for letting us share these images with our viewers.

Hotel Bel-Air Reopens

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Located on secluded Stone Canyon Road, Hotel Bel-Air reopened last month after 24 months of refurbishment and renovation. Part of the Dorchester Collection, design teams Alexandra Champalimaud and the Rockwell Group collaborated on the project, which paid “attention to detail in restoring the beloved iconic elements, while adding contemporary touches that will elevate the guest experience,” says General Manager Tim Lee, ensuring that the familiar Spanish Colonial architecture splashed in “Bel-Air Pink” is still present. Lead designer Champalimaud was commissioned to set the design style: from American mid-century modern to the glamorous decades of the 1930s, 40s and 50s conveyed in a fresh, youthful and elegant manner.

The hotel boasts gardens that bloom year-round, offering its guests complete privacy. Prior to the ceremony, couples are encouraged to explore the new fitness studio and expansive La Prairie Spa. The wedding party may prepare in one of the hotel’s suites, 12 of which are new and built into the hillside allowing for sweeping views of the canyon. Expansive sliding glass walls, outdoor fireplaces and spacious decks with private infinity edge spa pools are just a few of the highlights. Additionally, there are seven individually-designed specialty suites, including the famed Grace Kelly Suite, which can serve as the perfect backdrop for your getting ready photos.

Known for its garden weddings up to 200, options for your ceremony include the sprawling front lawn, Hotel Bel-Air’s famous Swan Lake, or — for those interested in a more intimate soirée — the 6,775-square-foot Presidential Suite, which features private dining for 10, a chef’s kitchen, study, great room with a grand piano, and private pool located within a private Spanish courtyard.

Reputed as one of the most romantic areas of the grounds, Swan Lake is a first choice for many couples looking to host a romantic daytime or evening wedding. Upon entering the area, guests are greeted with passed champagne and hors d‘oeuvres then seated beneath a canopy of trees overlooking the resident swans as they glide along the water.

Receptions are set indoors in the Garden Courtyard and Ballroom where a soothing palette of silver, beige and cream play up the handmade mercury glass chandeliers and dramatic arched ceilings. The hotel can arrange for anything from a 16-piece band to a petite orchestra to serenade your guests as they indulge in a four-course minimum dinner. After ample celebration, the bride and groom can retire to their suite and enjoy champagne and cake by the fire or a candlelit soak in the Jacuzzi on their private terrace. The following morning, couples are encouraged to invite their guests to a champagne brunch in The Palm Room before departing for their honeymoon.

With an overlying theme of romance it should be no surprise that celebrity couples like Lee Majors and Farrah Fawcett, Len Wiseman and Kate Beckinsale, and Jay Mohr and Nikki Cox, to name a few, have been known to flock to the property for their nuptials. Additionally, the property is a personal favorite of Oprah Winfrey’s and she once gave away a million dollar wedding to a lucky viewer.

The Giving Tree: Casey & Brando Get Married

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

I read love stories every day. Some make me laugh, some get me welled up a bit and some leave me in awe. Although I am not sure exactly how the big picture works, I can’t help but believe that fate exists and I think you will agree when you read Casey and Brando’s love story.

Their simple, California backyard wedding was elegant and deeply personal and I couldn’t help, but want to share it on a dismal day like today where it is pouring outside and they are forecasting snow for later this evening. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Casey Moss and Brando King
Married in Riverside, California on October 9, 2010

“On this day as our families entwine let the forever give the two of us strength throughout all seasons, for our loving bond to grow, our roots to bind as one
no matter how high or wide this tree will grow.
Mr. and Mrs. Glenn L Moss ,Sr. invite you to join them on this day as
Casey Colleen and Mr. Brando Scott King
begin the birth of their own branch, and the beginning of their life together.”

Casey Moss and Brando King coincidentally attended the same high school. Yet, Casey being a mere freshman who was two years younger than Brando, found herself having a school girl crush. It wasn’t until Brando graduated that Casey captured his heart and he surprised her with a first date at Seaworld in San Diego. They quickly built a strong connection and soon fell in love, but it wasn’t until later that they discovered another connection they’d shared for years, but had no idea.

As a girl, Casey and her mother frequented a post office that sold hand-painted greeting cards by a local woman from Lake Arrowhead. The artist told Casey and her mom the story behind her work and how she decided to sell her art to support her family. Touched by the woman’s story and her incredible talent, Casey and her mother bought them whenever they could. After a year of dating, Brando noticed the cards at Casey’s parent’s house and said “Those are my mother’s cards!”

Brando proposed in Coronado after sending Casey on an eight-hour scavenger hunt, which consisted of activities like yoga, a picnic lunch with her parents, and beer at a brewery with some of Brando’s friends and brothers. The day ended with Casey riding her bike around Coronado and arriving back at the spot that she had her picnic earlier in the day, to find Brando waiting for her with a view overlooking downtown San Diego.

Trees, yes trees, were the inspiration for Casey Moss and Brando King’s wedding. Like a tree, whose roots can grow three times as wide as the branches, a marriage also depends on the strength of its foundation—its roots.

Casey and Brando’s wedding was held in the backyard of Casey’s parent’s home—the house where she grew up and in the yard where she climbed trees. In fact, the branches of these same trees were used to make their six-foot tall “Tree Centerpieces” that were strung with yellow flowers and votive candle.

Brando’s mother Jody was the artist who created their tree logo, which consisted of a tree with its trunk formed out of the letter “K” for King. This logo was carried through from their balsa wood invitations to the programs, menus, cake, dance floor, and on the label wrapped around their parting gift: “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein.

On October 9, 2010, Brando and Casey began the birth of their own branch. Each aspect of their wedding reminded them of their past, illustrated pieces of their present, and excitement for their new life together.
