Viva Miami: Kelly & David Get Married

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

I am not sure if it is David Grey’s “This Year’s Love” playing in the background of this video that got me into an emotional place, or simply the obvious love between Kelly and David, but I might have needed a tissue when watching this. Anyone that follows the magazine, knows that I love the Mandarin Oriental in Miami, orchids and a gorgeous nighttime ceremony, and this wedding has all three.

I think perhaps one of the coolest things that a couple can do is infuse their personal style or implement a special tradition. I am not sure what those props are called that everyone is dancing with, but they definitely make for great visuals and shows that everyone is having one hell of a party. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did.

Kelly Bistritz Raven and David Gold
Married in Miami, Florida on May 29, 2011

“David [Gold] and I could not have come from more differing backgrounds,” describes Kelly Raven. “I was born and raised in Edmonton, Canada, while he spent his youth and early adulthood in Puerto Rico and Tel Aviv.” Their paths crossed in 2007 at MIT, where they ended up in the same graduate program. “We didn’t actually meet until many months in, and on a class trip to Japan no less,” says Kelly. “It was a combination of my love of dancing and David’s uncanny ability to locate a hip hop club anywhere on earth” that drew the two together.

They fell in love that summer when Kelly was interning at an investment bank in New York and David was in Miami working for his family’s company. Kelly worked long hours, so David would often find himself flying to New York on weekends. They spent the following year together in Boston, but after graduation they were again separated with Kelly taking a full-time position in New York and David starting a business in Mexico City. “For two years, we kept the relationship going with weekend visits and holidays together whenever possible,” says Kelly. “Admittedly, David bore the brunt of the travel.”

The proposal came while they were in Miami back in April of 2010. They spent the next year planning, working on Kelly’s conversion to Judaism, and preparing to start their life together in Mexico City. “Our wedding was a combination of cultures and religions, and everything was unforgettable,” remembers Kelly. “We wouldn’t change a thing!”

California Mission Shoot

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

I recently received this enchanting video from Andrew Hsu of Studio MSV and photographed by the talented Gustavo Fernandez and had to share it because of its romantic charm and unique ambiance. Named the “California Mission Shoot,” — inspired by the mission replica building of the Cline Cellars property where the shoot takes place in Sonoma, CA — tells the story of a gorgeous, young couple who made the mission their home and wanted to design a wedding around the lush areas that Sonoma has to offer. Olive branches, a cross and some antique, vintage details come to life to relive the “old world” feeling of California mission days. Thank you Andrew for sharing this with us and job well done to all the amazing talent who joined forces to paint such a vivid picture of past mission days.

It Had To Be Fate: Kamilya & Adilkhan Get Married

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Kamilya Serikova and Adilkhan Iskakov
Married in Prague, Czech Republic on August 14, 2010

Adilkhan saw Kamilya at the Ice Hockey World Championship in Prague in 2004, when Kazakhstan was playing against Latvia. As their eyes met, it truly was a love at first sight. “Kamilya was drawing Kazakh flags on the faces of supporters, when we first met,” remembers Adilkhan. Both immediately felt that it had to be fate that brought them together in the gorgeous city of Prague showing love for the Kazakhstan Ice Hockey team.

Initially driven together by a shared passion, it grew into an everlasting love for one another that they wanted to commemorate in an unforgettable way. After dating for five and a half years they decided to get married in the place where their love first blossomed, and also looked at it as a chance to bring their friends and family to the magical city where their lives were changed forever.

They both knew they wanted to have a wedding as unforgettable as the day they first met. “We always wanted to have a fairytale wedding in Prague,” recalls Kamilya. “We dreamt of driving an antique Rolls Royce through the beautiful cobble stone streets, getting married in a majestic castle and enjoying an incredible night of fine cuisine and dancing at one of Prague’s most sumptuous restaurants with our loved ones. Thanks to Alexandra from Cosmopolite Weddings our dreams came true!”

To capture the moment they turned to Los Angeles-based Couture Cinema. The occasion naturally lent itself to a vivid mural set for a motion picture. A horse-drawn carriage amongst the ancient medieval architecture of Prague and a ceremony in a castle as grandiose as it is historic, adorned with murals on every surface, created a story much too beautiful for fiction. The wedding day made for a visual playground to film.

Cinematography: Couture Cinema, Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA; Location: Troja Palace, Prague, Czech Republic; Event Planner: Cosmpolites’ Wedding, Prague, Czech Republic; Cake and Stationery: Hotel Kempinski Hybernská, Prague, Czech Republic; Ceremony Music: Adam’s Duo; Photography: Yulya Bazzy, Prague, Czech Republic

We wish you countless years of happiness Kamilya and Adilkhan and a big thank you to Yaroslav Kofman of Couture Cinema for letting us share this video with our viewers!

An Unexpected Match: Penny & George Get Married

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

In search of the perfect photographer and cinematographer, Penny yearned for someone that was not only capable of excellent quality, but also someone with a fashion flare. In short: she was searching for that “wow factor,” which would give their memories an artistic touch. The wedding was photographed by Nikos Gogas and filmed by Urban Cinematography. “This crew was our little secret,” Penny smiles. “To this day I continue to enjoy the reactions from others when we proudly display the memories of our special day.” Penny truly appreciated the effort, quality and results of the talented group, which she highly recommends for any occasion.

As much as the couple was focused on the elegant details of the wedding, the biggest priority for them was for all of their guests to have a memorable time as they had collectively travelled to Greece from six continents and then drove more than four hours from Athens to Monemvasia to be a part of the festivities. The party ended at almost 8 a.m. thanks to the wonderful efforts of DJ Stefano Fren and singer, Vaggelis Alkimos, who had almost all of their 370 guests dancing through the night and into the next morning.

Penny Kallas and George Retsos
Married on July 4, 2009 in Monemvasia, Greece

Penny and George grew up on opposite ends of the world—Penny in Vancouver, British Columbia and George in Pretoria, South Africa. George later immigrated to New York after receiving his master’s degree and it was there that he met Ginny, Penny’s best friend, through mutual acquaintances who recommended that the two meet. Bound for New York to visit college friends in 2006, Penny met George in a bustling club and it was love at first sight.

Although Ginny was right, love didn’t come easy. George succumbed to the demands of his work, while Penny’s strong family ties kept her in Canada, so a two-year long distance relationship ensued. “It actually wasn’t that difficult,” George remarks. “I always ended up working late, so when I got home late every night, the three hour difference in Vancouver worked in our favor and it was convenient for us to talk over the phone for a few hours. I think that it would’ve been much more difficult if we lived in the same city or even the same time zone!”

During that time, they rendezvoused in different cities. “It was like a monthly vacation for me,” smiles Penny. For George: “As much fun as it was, I ended up working the entire time, so it was just great for us to be in each other’s company.” Then in 2008, Penny decided to follow her dreams and pursue a career in the high paced and fickle NYC fashion industry.

Once they were living in the same city, it only took George six months to realize the caliber of his perfect companion before they were engaged beachside in Aruba. “It’s quite a funny story actually,” recalls George. “Penny wanted to go to a wedding in Vancouver and I didn’t want to go. So I used it as an excuse to propose at an alternate venue,” he explains of his suggestion to “enjoy a relaxing vacation in Aruba instead.” But George couldn’t seem to arrange a mutually-convenient time to sneak off to Vancouver to ask for Penny’s dad’s hand in marriage, with his career prompting travel. So, going against his plan, “I ended up going to the wedding in Vancouver, as that was the only opportunity that I had to get to speak to Penny’s dad face to face,” says George.

Shortly thereafter, in 2009, the couple wed amongst the ancient ruins of Monemvasia (a favorite destination among Penny’s family) in what they described as “a fairytale wedding.” Both of Greek decent, they agreed that it was the perfect place for their nuptials as George’s and Penny’s fathers’ villages were only an hour away and Penny had always dreamed of getting married there. Guests were awed by the site of ruins within the castle of Monemvasia, which had an enchanting and magical aura.

Looking For a Quiet Spot: Hollie & Alan Get Married

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

On the simplest of levels weddings are about two people making a commitment to one another. On a larger scale, it is also about all of the important people in your lives that made you who you are and brought you to that moment in your life.

While Hollie and Alan kept the decor simple, they put a major emphasis on their guests, so many of whom are special friends and family members. I think you can see it best when Alan is about to see Hollie for the first time and she walks down the staircase past all of their bridal party, standing their supporting them.

Things I love: The Storm watches as wedding party gifts. I think everyone knows how I feel about watches as being the perfect gift and certainly exemplify my theory. I also love the San Francisco City Hall. It is such a magnificent spot and I never tire of the architectural details that it offers couples as a ceremony location.

Hollie Ton and Alan Leong
Married in San Francisco, California on September 25, 2010

Alan Leong and Hollie Ton met while he was working in Sacramento. After Alan moved back to San Francisco, the couple continued to keep in touch and eventually started dating. Both Alan and Hollie love to travel and have traveled all over Asia and Europe together. After Alan received his MBA, he joined a consulting firm and was staffed on a project for 8 months in Europe where Hollie visited him frequently. At the conclusion of the project they decided to spend two weeks in Athens and the Greek Islands for vacation.

“I always wanted to visit Greece and this was the perfect time,” says Hollie. After visiting the ancient sites in Athens, the couple headed to the sunny Greek islands of Paros, Mykonos and Santorini. Oia Santorini, known throughout the world for its quiet life and fantastic sunset, was the perfect place for Alan to propose. “I was trying to find a quiet spot and didn’t realize the mass of people coming to see the sunset,” says Alan. Finally, as planned, Alan found a quiet spot and got down on one knee and proposed. “I was completely surprised,” says Hollie.

After a one year engagement, Hollie and Alan started to plan for their wedding. Hollie wanted to have an elegant wedding and decided on red and pink for their colors. After visiting many wedding locations, they opted for the San Francisco City Hall. “This was the perfect venue,” says Hollie. “We really wanted to have all our close friends and family participate in the wedding. My close friend Willie who I’ve known from grammar school was our Officiant,” says Alan. “For flowers, we had orchids in vases along the aisle and at the base of the rotunda, there were two large manzanita trees dotted with orchids,” says Hollie.

For the wedding reception, the couple decided on One Market restaurant. “This was a great venue. We enjoyed the food tasting and liked the idea of having our cocktail hour in the restaurant and dinner in the outside atrium,” says Alan. “We had a wonderful time with all our friends and family! This couldn’t have happened without the help of our family, friends, and some great vendors,” says Hollie.

To help with the planning and coordination of the event, Alan’s sister, Cynthia, and her friend, Marilyn, took charge. “Deciding on the cake vendor was easy since my sister Belinda, who’s the pastry chef at Manresa in Los Gatos, was more than willing to help,” says Alan. “Our photographers were amazing. Both brothers, Alex from IQ Videography and Joseph from IQ Pphoto helped us capture our special occasion,” says Hollie.

After an exciting weekend, they escaped for a two-week honeymoon to Tahitti, Bora Bora and Fakarava. “We stayed at the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora. The resort and the service were amazing. I definitely recommend the over water bungalows. It was so relaxing,” says Hollie.

Settling Down Together: Minh-Han & Reff Get Married

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Hiring a videographer (and a photographer for that matter) for more events than just your wedding, is key. It gives you a chance to work together; to get used to being the focus; to become friendly with the vendors you have chosen to work with, but to also become so comfortable with them and their presence that you almost forget they are there. The fact that Minh-Han and Reff hired Kolby Akamu of ARIA Studios for their rehearsal dinner was one of the smartest things they could have done. Not to mention, now they have footage of an event that most people might walk away from with some pictures, if that.

Things I love: the side by side footage of Minh-Han and Reff. I think it is human nature to wonder what your partner is doing and it’s not often that you can witness it simultaneously to what you are doing. The family photos on the cake table are a wonderful touch, the way Minh-Han added a sash to her dress at the reception. Although this trend has been around for some time now, it adds a casualness and also a bit of color that you may not want to have during the ceremony or in your pictures.

PS – a great trick for all of those buttons on the back of a wedding gown is crochet hook. Don’t ask me how I know, but it works.

Minh-Han Phan and Reff Cheng
Married in Rutherford, California on August 21, 2010

Reff and Minh-Han are successful, intelligent and incredibly fashionable people. Minh-Han studied design, and Reff, well, did you see his custom suit? But, they are also two of the most adorable, thoughtful and genuine people you’ll ever meet. They met at UCLA and over the last decade have traveled the world together and overcome years of doing the long-distance relationship thing, and endured the demands of law school and business school. They are excited to settle down together. And, in only just a few months their family has already grown with the welcome addition of Patch, their new beagle puppy.

Cinematography: ARIA Studios, Honolulu, HI; Location: Auberge du Soleil, Rutherford, CA; Event Planner: Andrea Lee, Coquette Events, Palo Alto, CA; Florist: Nancy Liu Chin Floral & Event Design, San Francisco, CA; Officiant: Weddings of the Heart; Guitarist: Montara Music by Mike McCall; DJ: Ryan Li; Shoes: Pelle Moda; Wedding Gown: Marisa; Photography: Augie Chang Photography, San Francisco, CA

We wish you countless years of happiness Minh-Han and Reff and a big thank you to Kolby Akamu of ARIA Studios for letting us share this video with our viewers!

Knew Early On: Megan & Lee Get Married

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Being a luxury wedding publication, one of the biggest limitations the magazine has, aside from never having enough pages to show everything that I love, is not being able to adequately cover videographers and cinematographers simply because their craft is multimedia. Since we started doing these online feature wedding videos almost a month ago, we have gotten incredible feedback about how these posts are spotlighting all of the talent that exists out there. It has been my absolute pleasure to include these teasers, or trailers if you will, and today’s video by Shaking Hands Productions is no exception.

Things I love: Megan is absolutely gorgeous and her gown is stunning. Is that Badgley Mischka? The contrast of her bouquet against her gown, not to mention it incorporates orchids, which most of you know is my absolute favorite flower, her red shoes, and I was touched by the emotion that Lee shows at the beginning.

Megan Fitzsimmons and Lee Willard
Married in Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia on June 5, 2010

After graduating from Virginia Tech, Roanoke native, Lee, ventured up to Washington, D.C., for a change of pace. It was here that he met George Mason University graduate and city girl, Megan. The couple knew early on what the future had in store for them; tying the knot after three years of dating.

Shortly after marring the newlyweds traded in their high-rise condo in the city for a single-family home in southwest Virginia fit for children (when the time is right). When Lee isn’t working in commercial real estate and Megan is away from excel spreadsheets, the couple remains entertained by their two miniature dachshunds, Oscar and Harvey.

Cinematographer: Shaking Hands Productions, Lynchburg, VA; Location and Caterer: The Water’s Edge Country Club, Penhook, VA; Florist: Melanie McKenzie, MelleFleur, Washington, DC; Cupcakes: Bubblecake Bake Shop, Roanoke, VA; Photography: Bob Updegrove Photographer, Washington, DC

We wish you countless years of happiness Megan and Lee and a big thank you to Brad Bennett of Shaking Hands Productions for letting us share this video with our viewers!

The First Stepping Stone: Elizabeth & Nader Get Married

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

With offices in Rhode Island, I don’t get to meet everyone that we work with through the years. But when it came time for the New England leg of my book tour, I was finally able to meet Bruce Cullen of Dream Images real life motion pictures, who generously acquiesced to my request and hustled from state to state, documenting each party. Seeing each film, made me develop a huge appreciation for Bruce’s work and I couldn’t wait to share his film with you for this week’s wedding.

Things I love: those two children, don’t kids just make a wedding? The enthusiasm and celebration—it looks like everyone has such a wonderful time. Also, Elizabeth’s Monique Lhuillier wedding gown, the Picasso calla lilies and their candid sense of humor.

Elizabeth Samander and Nader Joseph Ajlouny
Married in Old Greenwich, Connecticut on October 23, 2010

Elizabeth and Nader first met one another in 2003 at the American Federation of Ramallah, Palestine annual convention in Washington, DC. Unbeknownst to them, this would be their first meeting and would later become the first stepping stone that would mark the beginning of their future together. At the time, Elizabeth was attending graduate school at the University of Connecticut pursuing her Ph.D. in biomedical science, while Nader was living and working in North Carolina. It took another five years before they would see each other again—this time reacquainting at the 50th anniversary of the AFRP annual convention in Detroit, Mich., in 2008. Their reunion turned into friendship and quickly became more, when months later, Nader planned to visit Elizabeth in New York City over a long weekend.

This trip officially kicked off their courtship and their first real date consisted of an evening dinner and seats at The Phantom of the Opera. That weekend began what, for Nader, became the true beginning of their relationship and he realized that fate had dealt him a second chance to pursue a future with Elizabeth. Nader knew in Washington, DC, what was now becoming a reality: that his true love had returned to him!

VIP Fashion Show: Roma Sposa

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Last Wednesday, March 31st, I had the pleasure of being a special guest of Anna Roselli, owner of Roma Sposa at their “Night of Wedding Style.”

Hosted at The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, Michigan, the night consisted of a fashion show featuring American and European bridal gown and eveningwear designers, special guest and renowned couture designer Ines Di Santo, and another city stop on my book tour for Grace Ormonde Weddings – “being in love never goes out of style.”

It was such an amazing night; seeing the latest fashion always gets me excited. I was thrilled to see Anna again and also to have the chance to finally see her bridal salon in person, and as always, I was delighted to meet up with my friend Ines, especially when she is so busy preparing for bridal market in New York later this week.

Thank you to everyone who attended from throughout the state of Michigan, as well as those of you that drove in from Chicago. It was a pleasure to meet so many brides, see so many business colleagues and to be able to continue the tour here. A special thank you to Loudbyte Cinematography for filming and photographers Steve and Debi Ragland of Ragland Studios for photographing the event.

The Perfect Match: Reena & Colin Get Married

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Being born in the Azores and raised Portuguese, I appreciate, embrace and love being surrounded by different cultures and ethnicities. Come into our office and you will be greeted by a plethora of backgrounds including Greek, Lithuanian, Cuban, Italian, Swedish, German, English, Irish, of course Portuguese, and, well you get the point. So naturally, when I am going through wedding submissions (which there have been thousands of; thank you all so much for taking the time to share your work), I am overtly intrigued by weddings of different cultures and this one, which merges Goan Catholic traditions and Hindu Punjabi festivities, is equally intriguing.

What I like best about this video created by Darren Sager of D.M.S. Video Productions in Ontario, Canada, is that it is simply a teaser, luring you into Reena and Colin’s multi-day affair and at the end I want to see more. Don’t you?

Reena Chada and Colin Lobo
Married in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on July 23-24, 2010

If you ever thought its impossible to meet your perfect match at a night club, think again. Colin and Reena met while dancing the night away at a Toronto night club. After accidentally bumping into each other on the dance floor (quite literally), they were instantly drawn to one another and spent the remainder of the evening chatting up a storm. Their relationship grew into something truly wonderful and two years later, while traveling in the Amazon Rainforest in Peru, Colin took Reena on a canopy walk 100 feet high in the jungle. Amongst the treetops, while the sun was slowly setting, Colin got down on one knee and asked for Reena’s hand in marriage. Shocked at this amazing surprise proposal, Reena excitedly accepted, and the rest is history.

Cinematography: D.M.S. Video Productions, Concord, ON, Canada; Ceremony Location: St. Ignatius of Loyola; Hindu Ceremony and Reception Location: Grand Victorian Convention Centre, Mississauga, ON, Canada; Flowers: Natasha, Grand Victorian Convention Centre; Entertainment: DJ Jiten; Photography: Kumari Photo & Design, Toronto, ON, Canada

We wish you countless years of happiness Reena and Colin and a big thank you to Darren Sager of D.M.S. Video Productions for letting us share this video with our viewers!
