Watching the Soaps

Friday, February 10th, 2012

When I was younger I watched a few soap operas here and there. I remember being intrigued with the drawn out storylines and how dramatic everyone’s lives apparently were. How five bad things rarely happen to anyone in one day in real life, but always seem to happen to one person in the soaps and how the characters’ deep, dark pasts always get tangled up and seem to cross. “This one” is actually “that one’s” mother and “so and so” is back from the dead after she was kidnapped by her uncle who is really her dad … you catch my drift. Juicy, gossipy, soap opera-y goodness.

So, naturally when I got this submission from Kelly McWilliams of Weddings by Socialites labeled “Soap Short” I found myself wanting to check it out. While the video is more for your viewing pleasure, any bride can take away inspiration from the incredible photo shoot that was held in tandem with the video production. The decor is romantic and full of whimsy and I love the color palette. Whether you want to catch a few minutes of cinematic drama or simply want to check out the team’s creations, sit back and enjoy!

According to the Team:

We chose Mediterra for its Mediterranean aesthetic. We wanted everything to feel approachable and effortless. The storyline is almost soap opera-esque. You’re first introduced to Olivia, the sweet bride, who is apparently struggling to sign and return a R.S.V.P. Then we meet sweet Christopher and his seductive bride Jacqueline as they sign their marriage certificate in a private hidden garden setting. After signing the certificate, Jacqueline walks by the beginnings of her reception, and admires her cake and table. She then walks inside and inspects her escort card table on the way to her pre-ceremony glamour photo shoot with Christopher. At the end of the hall, she finds Christopher’s diary with a picture of Olivia, the sweet bride. Meanwhile, Christopher and Olivia are thinking of each other, not even realizing that they are divided by a mere wall. At the ceremony site, we see Jacqueline stripped of her fantasy gown and barefoot. She is relieved and ready to move on returning her ring to Christopher. They both smile and hug, feeling calmed. Jacqueline runs off to her new groom whom she was really in love with and Christopher runs to find his true love Olivia.

Mariachi Love: Analee & Brian Get Married

Friday, January 27th, 2012

It’s a rainy Friday and I thought that this Costa Mesa wedding filmed by the fabulous John Goolsby of Godfather Films was such an appropriate video to share to uplift my spirit a bit. This couple has so much energy and clearly shares so much love for one another. I love the vibe of their wedding, the masks at the reception and both of Analee’s gowns are beautiful. I hope you like it as much as I did. Enjoy!

Brian Gomez & Analee Almeida-Gomez
Married in Costa Mesa, California on November 26, 2011

Both being from Hispanic decent, we always dreamed of having a big wedding to be able to share with our entire family and friends. Celebrations by Turnip Rose was the perfect venue for us, we were going for more of a modern look with an elegant touch, Celebrations had all of this and more! The bride knew exactly how she wanted the venue decorated, she looked to her mother that has had many years of experience servicing luxury weddings in Mexico through her own independent business. A traditional Catholic wedding, we had a mariachi band at the ceremony and the reception which gave it an authentic touch, the white glove catering company put on a little show while they brought out the main entrée. We even had “The crazy hour” which consisted of providing our guests with masquerade themed masks while dancing to upbeat salsa and reggae songs for about an hour. Until this day, we get Facebook messages from friends of friends that have seen the video online and want to incorporate some of the ideas that we had in our wedding for their upcoming weddings. We feel very blessed that we were able to work with such amazing vendors that not only provided quality work but made you cherish every moment of that special day!

Videography: Godfather Films, Riverside, CA; Ceremony Location: San Joachim Catholic Church, Costa Mesa, CA; Reception Location and Caterer: Celebrations By Turnip Rose, Costa Mesa, CA; Decor: Francisca Almeida, Analee Almeida-Gomez; Photography: True Photography, Costa Mesa, CA

We wish you countless years of happiness Analee and Brian and a big thank you to John Goolsby of Godfather Films for letting us share this video with our viewers!

Twist of Fate: Thea & George Get Married

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Perhaps it is the fact that Yanni is Greek and his family still resides in Greece, but I have a love affair for the incredible destination. We were so excited when we started to open up the Platinum List internationally and one of our first members was the amazing and talented Urban Cinematography.

Last summer we shared Penny and George’s wedding with you and today I hope you enjoy Thea and George’s wedding. PS – the photographer for this wedding was Nikos P. Gogas. If you are not familiar with his work, you have to check out Kristine and Christopher’s wedding, which we featured in our newest issue. Enjoy!

Thea Ioakimidis and George Eliopoulos
Married in Halkidiki, Greece on August 20, 2011

Our love story was a twist on fate. It happened when we least expected it and there was no denying it. It was a match made in heaven that was a vision of a close mutual friend who knew this would work out perfectly.

After a few moments of persistence and describing one person to the other, George agreed to make the first call and throw caution to the wind. The chemistry was electrifying from the beginning and the connection made between us was undeniable. Fast-forward three years and our lives are finally complete. George swept me off my feet when he proposed and still is sweeping me off my feet every day of our new life together as man and wife. Life without each other is unimaginable.

Working with Urban Cinematography was and has been amazing. Apostolos is an incredible artist in every sense of the word. From the first time we met and viewed some of his previous work, I had no doubt and put all my trust in his hands to capture one of the most special days of our lives. I love sharing his work with friends and family and seeing their reactions. I have watched our video clip more than 100 times and it still gets me tearful every time. Apostolos and his team gave us a product we will treasure forever!

Cinematography: Urban Cinematography, Thessaloniki, Greece; Ceremony Location: Marmaras; Reception Location: Villa Galini Porto Carras, Halkidiki, Greece; Event Planner: Anna Piatou, Gala Special Events; Decorations: Xelle; Lighting: LOUD; Groom’s Attire: Gucci; Shoes: Manolo Blahnik; Wedding Gown: Lazaro; Photography: Nikos P. VIP Networking Event: Ashford Estate

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

In the midst of deadline, I took a couple of days to sneak away to New Jersey for our VIP Networking Event and Book Signing for my hardcover book: Grace Ormonde Weddings – “Being In Love Never Goes Out of Style.”

Upon arriving at the Ashford Estate I thought I was driving up to a scene from a movie. Once you turn the corner of the driveway and reach the iron gates with gold lions, it is simply breathtaking. The grounds were gorgeous and meticulous. After scooping them out and entering the estate, I could not believe the beautiful interiors. It felt more like a home rather than a huge mansion and the hospitality made it hard to leave.

The night was nothing short of fabulous and I would like to extend my warmest thank you to the talented professionals who created that lovely evening:

First Look: Jean & Stephen Get Married

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

Like most people, I love a nice glass of wine, and even moreso I love a vineyard wedding in the Hamptons. Jean and Stephen’s wedding at Bedell Cellars Winery in the North Fork of Long Island, New York, is simple, yet sophisticated. I love the location complete with row upon row of grapevines and plenty of ambiance and both of Jean’s gowns. Does anyone else think she looks like Vera Wang or is it just me? The swing dance image is priceless and I am finding that photo booths are a must. I hope you enjoy this wedding as much as I did.

Jean Yang and Stephen Lesko
Married in Cutchogue, New York on July 31, 2010

Jean Yang and Stephen Lesko met one night while they were out with old college friends who happened to be dating at the time. “It wasn’t a set-up, but somehow we ended sitting next to each other and talking all night,” says Jean. “Our friends were high-fiving in the corner and patting themselves on the back. And the rest, as they say, is history!”

Steve and Jean chose to have their “first look” at the home where they got ready, before heading to Bedell Cellars Winery on the North Fork of Long Island, New York to greet their guests. Their outdoor ceremony took place under a big Oak tree, and the simplicity provided an understated elegance.

“We loved walking through the vineyards with the bridal party for some candids,” says Jean. At the same time, Anthony Jacobs from Perspective Aerials shot a video using drone aerial technology. We’re pretty sure that it’s the first aerial wedding trailer shot at 50-100 feet in the air using a drone!”

The décor incorporated flowers in red, orange, green and gold and Jean’s mom lovingly handcrafted grasshoppers hidden in the centerpieces. For the reception, Jean changed into a red party dress, pulled back her hair and put on her Jimmy Choos for her surprise swing dance with Steve.

Partnering for Life: Kristen & Collin Get Married

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

You probably already know this by now, but I love being near the water. Whether I am in my home looking out at boaters going by, on a day excursion to nearby Newport, Rhode Island, or away on business in Florida, Maine or California, the coast always lures me in.

I love Kristen and Collin’s wedding for its simple elegance. There is all of the serenity of a beachside wedding with the neutral color palette, without it being too literal. I also love the fact that they chose the Don CeSar Hotel, a.k.a. the pink palace, and didn’t fight the atmosphere, but rather complimented it with their decor choices. Add in a gorgeous gown and beautiful photography and I hope you enjoy this wedding as much as I did!

Kristen Elizabeth Marks and Collin James Breslin
Married in St. Pete Beach, Florida on October 16, 2010

Kristen Marks and Collin Breslin are what you might call true college sweethearts. They met during their freshman year at Penn State University, and after starting out as casual acquaintances, they soon found a love to last a lifetime.

Collin was first introduced to Kristen at a party and unknowingly, neither could deny the instant chemistry between the two of them. They often saw each other in passing at social events and on campus, but didn’t have a real chance to get to know one another until months after they first met. Fortunately, Collin’s fraternity and Kristen’s sorority partnered to raise money for Penn State’s THON — a philanthropy focused on combating pediatric cancer — which provided the perfect opportunity for them to spend more time with one another. After returning from a weekend of fundraising, Collin asked Kristen out on their first date and they have been together ever since.

Flash forward seven years, and Collin and Kristen were spending a summer afternoon enjoying cocktails while watching a tennis match in Washington, D.C. Afterwards, they went out to a romantic dinner in the city and then headed back to Kristen’s house in Virginia. As Collin helped Kristen out of the car, he surprised her by getting down on one knee, right in the middle of the street, and proposed. Kristen was absolutely shocked and speechless. After catching her breath and wiping away tears, she said yes.

The inspiration for their wedding was romantic elegance. To achieve that feeling at the reception, they used a soft color palette of whites, creams and golds with low lighting and lots of candlelight. Florida’s “pink palace,” also known as the Don CeSar Hotel, helped set the mood and provided a beautiful background to their fairytale evening of family, friends and love. The couple spent the next two weeks on a European honeymoon, traveling to England, France and Italy.

Ceremony Location: Saint Raphael Catholic Church, St. Petersburg, FL; Reception Location and Caterer: Don CeSar Hotel, A Loews Hotel, St. Pete Beach, FL; Cake: Cakes by Tara Bishop at Don CeSar Hotel; Event Planner: Cheers! Soul and Substance: Anjhula & Satish Get Married

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

I wanted to share this video today because it doesn’t just show a love story, it feels like a mini movie. Although both Anjhula and Satish are very private people and did not even allow cameras at their wedding, they have agreed to let us share their video with you because they are so happy with the finished product. They both feel that great art must be shared with the world, and “every time I see the video, it stirs my soul,” says Anjhula.

Anjhula Mya Singh Bais & Satish Selvanathan
Married in Rajasthan, India on October 21, 2010 – October 24, 2010

Once upon a time and four years ago in central London, a chance meeting took place. The protagonists in this story — a tall and handsome Sri Lankan and a lovely and passionate Rajput Princess — met at a dinner party planned by their two Greek friends from university. As the only non-Greeks at this dinner, the two started talking. Fast forward two years, and both were studying at Columbia University in New York, enjoying lunches on campus and numerous late night slices of pizza following business school socials.

As a model, Anjhula has had the opportunity to shoot with the best photographers around the world. Every vendor and detail of her wedding was meticulously chosen, taking into account the talent that each person would be able to provide, making her wedding day perfect. Anjhula selected Yaro from CoutureCinema because he takes his craft very seriously. Anjhula notes: “Everyone does a video which captures the events sequentially and monotonously. Yaro and I created a film, cinema, magic. It is visual art.”

Anjhula’s family hails from Banswara in Rajasthan, India. To preserve the traditions and customs passed down through her family for centuries, they felt that the ideal backdrop would have to be the Royal Palace. Their guests (from more than 28 countries, which included royalty, Bollywood actors, athletes, and heads of state) had their luggage ferried in upon royal armory and camels. Upon arrival, each guest was presented with a kurta or saree to wear at functions, and left with silver coins. In regal fashion, their guests resided in air-conditioned tents in the desert and enjoyed access to hookah lounges day and night. A friendly game of elephant polo served as the ice breaker event on the first day. On the second day, their friends from around the world performed to Bollywood numbers and white-gloved waiters served them a sit-down dinner on silver during the reception. Come the wedding day, Satish arrived on an elephant bedecked with precious jewels and carrying a 100-year-old sword.

The couple decided to forsake gifts and instead asked their guests to contribute to their chosen charities. Everything from the flowers to the tents were locally and organically sourced, helping the local economy where the majority of people live below the poverty line. Even though there was pressure to import flowers and use a fountain, they opted to not have a carbon footprint and thought about the persistent water shortage and said no to both. With that spirit, Anjhula believes that “you know you have found the right person when you’re not so busy looking at each other, but rather in the same direction.”

Cinematography: CoutureCinema, Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA; Location: Royal Palace, Banswara, Rajasthan, India; Music: Rajasthan Roots; Anjhula’s Jewelry: Gem Palace; Satish’s Suit: Designed by the royal prince, his highness Raghuvendra Rathore; Photographers: Akash Das, Rahul Dutta, Cimmaron Singh

We wish you countless years of happiness Anjhula and Satish and a big thank you to Yaroslav Kofman of CoutureCinema for letting us share this video with our viewers!

Down on One Knee: Olga & Jose Get Married

Friday, September 16th, 2011

I adore this wedding so much that even after featuring it in the Grace Ormonde Wedding Style 2010: Fall/Winter issue, I still felt compelled to share their video with you today. Their love story, that gown, the decor and those toasts. This video shows the love of Olga and Jose surrounded by all 1,200 of their guests, and it ended with a huge celebration. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Olga Mari Garcia & Jose Antonio Garrido III
Married in Miami, Florida on February 19, 2010

Olga Garcia envisioned a “quaint and small wedding, but Jose has many cousins,” she says, explaining how their celebration burgeoned into “a huge event” attended by 1,200. Amid the revelry, the two never lost sight of each other—or of the day’s momentousness.

Although Miami-based law student Jose Garrido III had been urged to meet Olga by his best friend and roommate, who was dating Olga’s college roommate, the couple encountered each other entirely by chance at a Miami bar in July of 2006. “That night, he said, ‘I’m going to marry you,’ so I found him a little bit interesting,” remembers Olga, who was visiting from Tallahassee. “We became great friends on the phone,” Olga says, and their first date in October “sealed the deal.”

Over Memorial Day weekend in 2009, the intensive care nurse had just completed three exhausting shifts when she headed to Jose’s with wet hair, no makeup and a sandwich craving. “I sat down to eat my baguette,” says Olga, “and midway through one bite, he gets down on one knee. I thought he was looking for the remote control.” When Jose professed, “I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” Olga “almost fainted.”

She was similarly overcome when Jose’s gift arrived as she prepared for their Friday evening nuptials at Miami’s Church of the Epiphany. “He listens; he loves me,” she thought when she beheld a tennis bracelet—a future heirloom she’d wished for.

When he saw Olga, Jose says he “wanted to run down the aisle.” During their Catholic-Cuban service, they were draped with a mantilla by their godmothers and exchanged 13 gold “arras (coins),” symbolizing “what’s mine is yours,” he explains. Jose works for his family’s Latin American food distribution company but admits his Spanish is “a little broken.” When the priest unexpectedly switched languages, Jose’s recitation “was so bad, I started laughing, and the entire church started laughing,” remembers Olga.

Following an island-flavored cocktail hour with acrobats, dancers and a steel drum band at Jose’s aunt’s sister-in-law’s adjacent property, stilt walkers led guests to Jose’s aunt and uncle’s plantation-style Coral Gables home, where maps helped them locate food stations, dessert tables, an illuminated bar staffed by 36 bartenders, an ice bar, tobacco roller and many, many restrooms.

Despite the party’s enormity, as the newlyweds ducked beneath sparklers and danced in the glow of suspended lanterns, Olga recalls thinking, “It’s just me and you. There’s no one else. It was a big production, but it was very intimate.”

The couple honeymooned in St. Lucia, San Francisco and Napa. Although his business requires travel and her long hours necessitate separations, at their wedding, a multitude of well-wishers couldn’t keep them apart. Olga confesses, “I was worried I would lose him, and I’d be alone on my wedding day.” Instead, “We spent all five hours dancing together.”

Viva Miami: Kelly & David Get Married

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

I am not sure if it is David Grey’s “This Year’s Love” playing in the background of this video that got me into an emotional place, or simply the obvious love between Kelly and David, but I might have needed a tissue when watching this. Anyone that follows the magazine, knows that I love the Mandarin Oriental in Miami, orchids and a gorgeous nighttime ceremony, and this wedding has all three.

I think perhaps one of the coolest things that a couple can do is infuse their personal style or implement a special tradition. I am not sure what those props are called that everyone is dancing with, but they definitely make for great visuals and shows that everyone is having one hell of a party. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did.

Kelly Bistritz Raven and David Gold
Married in Miami, Florida on May 29, 2011

“David [Gold] and I could not have come from more differing backgrounds,” describes Kelly Raven. “I was born and raised in Edmonton, Canada, while he spent his youth and early adulthood in Puerto Rico and Tel Aviv.” Their paths crossed in 2007 at MIT, where they ended up in the same graduate program. “We didn’t actually meet until many months in, and on a class trip to Japan no less,” says Kelly. “It was a combination of my love of dancing and David’s uncanny ability to locate a hip hop club anywhere on earth” that drew the two together.

They fell in love that summer when Kelly was interning at an investment bank in New York and David was in Miami working for his family’s company. Kelly worked long hours, so David would often find himself flying to New York on weekends. They spent the following year together in Boston, but after graduation they were again separated with Kelly taking a full-time position in New York and David starting a business in Mexico City. “For two years, we kept the relationship going with weekend visits and holidays together whenever possible,” says Kelly. “Admittedly, David bore the brunt of the travel.”

The proposal came while they were in Miami back in April of 2010. They spent the next year planning, working on Kelly’s conversion to Judaism, and preparing to start their life together in Mexico City. “Our wedding was a combination of cultures and religions, and everything was unforgettable,” remembers Kelly. “We wouldn’t change a thing!”

California Mission Shoot

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

I recently received this enchanting video from Andrew Hsu of Studio MSV and photographed by the talented Gustavo Fernandez and had to share it because of its romantic charm and unique ambiance. Named the “California Mission Shoot,” — inspired by the mission replica building of the Cline Cellars property where the shoot takes place in Sonoma, CA — tells the story of a gorgeous, young couple who made the mission their home and wanted to design a wedding around the lush areas that Sonoma has to offer. Olive branches, a cross and some antique, vintage details come to life to relive the “old world” feeling of California mission days. Thank you Andrew for sharing this with us and job well done to all the amazing talent who joined forces to paint such a vivid picture of past mission days.
