Timeless Antique: Jessica & Ryan Get Married

Friday, July 27th, 2012

Jessa Kurzman and Ryan Francis
Married in New Marlborough, Massachusetts on November 5, 2011

It was a festive time of year when Jessa Kurzman and Ryan Francis first met — a Christmas party — and they sensed from that moment on that life was going to be a bit different. Circumstances didn’t allow them to meet again until the spring where they were able to rekindle what they felt months before. And three years later, they found themselves buying their first home moving in just before Christmas setting the scene for a perfect proposal.

On their rooted Christmas tree, Ryan hung a one-of-a- kind ring that he designed and with Train’s “Marry Me” playing in the background, he asked Jessica that timeless question: “Will you marry me today and every day?” The tree is now planted in their yard, and the ribbon from which the ring was hung still remains as a reminder of that gifted moment.

The wedding was elegant, yet comfortable, down to earth, natural, organic and simply unforgettable. The couple vowed to only do only what was important to them and what could be done well. They wanted to make sure it would be a day filled with surprises and that both they and all of their guests could enjoy themselves.

It wasn’t long before Ryan and Jessa found the perfect venue: Gedney Farm in the midst of the Berkshires. A rustic, yet classic barn with 40-foot ceilings and multiple levels, they felt that the location expressed their kinship with nature, flora and fauna. Jessa and Ryan were married in the third floor loft under the spreading branches of live trees, still replete with yellow, red and orange leaves reaching above the rafters.

Cocktail hour was on the first floor and the reception on the second, all tied together with cold, crisp fall birch trees, while the inside was kept warm with stone fireplaces on each level. The tables and mantels mirrored a fall harvest with centerpieces of herbs, turnips, artichokes and other decorative vegetables.

Five food stations were located around the perameters of the barn encouraging movement during dinner keeping the energy high. Dessert consisted of a variety of individual, miniature pies instead of a traditional wedding cake and, as a surprise to their guests, midnight snacks of grilled cheese, pulled pork sandwiches and French fries filled the tables one last time.

Jessa’s dress was created especially for her by New York haute couture designer Angelo Lambrou. It was graceful, elegant and comfortable. The groom and groomsmen wore black suits, thin ties and copper wire boutonnieres that were inspired by the copper in the wood floors.

A surprise for all the guests was a sky of glimmering splashes of color in a fireworks display, highlighted by one shaped like a heart symbolic of a perfect day and a perfect love.

What They Enjoyed Most: Jenny & Pat Get Married

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

As we approach the end of the week and the start of the next, our editors will be at large from San Francisco to Los Angeles and Washington, DC shooting tabletops, our fashion and cover shoot and exploring everything the cities have to offer. So, I thought to myself, what could be more appropriate today than to share a fabulous Washington, DC wedding at the esteemed Four Seasons Hotel?

I hope you enjoy this video by Blue Sky Films as much as I did and beware of the toasts — they are pretty darn good and you might need a tissue or two.

Jenny Clark and Pat Castle
Married in Washington, DC on May 14, 2011

What Jenny and Pat remember most about their wedding is that they were thrilled to be surrounded by all of their family and friends. “It was so meaningful to know they were all there to celebrate our special day,” says Jenny. “Our favorite part was dancing and letting loose after such a formal day; it was nice to step out of the spotlight and let everyone join us on the dance floor.”

Ashley Stearns and Matthew Levin
Married in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 24, 2010

Matt Levin and Ashley Stearns met through mutual friends. Ashley’s roommate at the time was dating Matthew’s roommate, and Ashley invited all of her friend’s boyfriend’s friends to her birthday party.

Unfortunately Matt wasn’t able to come and emailed me to apologize. “I think he thought I was hitting on him by inviting him,” says Ashley, “but to make up for him not showing up, we decided to meet for drinks and the rest is history!” They dated for three years before Matt proposed and then completely surprised Ashley when all their family, “including my parents from out of town,” remembers Ashley, “were at a restaurant to celebrate.”

While the couple lives in Los Angeles, they decided that they wanted to get married somewhere outside of California since Ashley is originally from Chicago and her family was split between the windy city and sin city.

“When we visited the Four Seasons Hotel in Las Vegas,” says Ashley, “we immediately knew that it was where we wanted to get married.” They decided that Vegas was a short enough trip for all of their L.A., friends and family and it would be a nice vaca for the Chicagoan guests.

During the wedding planning process, Ashley’s vision was always aimed at having an understated romantic look. “I knew it was easy to get carried away with too much going on, so I stuck to simple, natural colors,” shares Ashley about their choice for ivory and green décor. Candles also played a very important role for the nighttime wedding and added to the romance they seeked. One splurge was the ambient lighting, which the couple feels “made a big impact in the overall look and feel.” In the end, they loved every part of their wedding, although they didn’t live up to the city’s reputation of keeping what happened in Vegas in Vegas, but instead shared it with their closest family and friends.

Surprised They Hadn’t Met Before: Angelina & Charles Get Married

Monday, March 19th, 2012

You know you had a great time when you perspire. Angelina and Charles look like they had so much fun at their northern New Jersey wedding last August. I think Joseph Edwards Films perspective comes through crystal clear with their cinematography: the perfect marriage between a subtle eye and conveying a sense of energy. So, now I think the only thing to do is dance. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Angelina Troia and Charles Sferlazza
Married in Garfield, New York on August 14, 2011

Angelina Troia and Charles Sferlazza met on a weekend trip to Atlantic City for Angelina’s cousin’s birthday, who also happened to be one of Charlie’s best friends. Surprised that they had never met before, they hit it off right away and have been together ever since.

They were married four years later surrounded by 300 of their closest friends and family members at The Venetian in Garfield, New Jersey. “It was the first and the last venue we visited,” remembers Angelina. Once the couple saw the large ballroom with its chandelier-strung high ceilings and tasted the delicious food, they knew that this is the place where they would get married.

Although the weather didn’t cooperate, and there was 10 inches of rain that day, it still turned out to be the perfect day that Angelina and Charles had always imagined it would be.

Love is Sweet: Katy & Jarrod Get Married

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Sometimes more is too much, sometimes more is perfect and sometimes, well sometimes less is more. One of the things that I like best about Katy and Jarrod’s Big Sur wedding is its simple elegance. I love all of the shimmer paired with the casual feel of the outdoor setting. I love her Monique Lhuillier gown with its sexy back, and all of the little things like their dog being part of the ceremony, Katy’s mom helping collect pieces for their wedding and the bench picture (be sure to read their story to find out why this is so much better than it sounds).

Perhaps some of the best romances do start out of friendships. What do you think? Either way, I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Katy Kunkel and Jarrod Muenter
Married in Big Sur, California on May 30

Katy Kunkel and Jarrod Muenter met while they were living in the same dorm and playing water polo together at UC Santa Barbara. “I was unaware of Jarrod’s interest in me for about the first year of hanging out,” says Katy admitting that she naively considered them to just be “really good friends.” A short time later, while the duo was on a failed SCUBA diving trip, Katy realized that Jarrod had feelings for her when she “had to cut him out of kelp.”

They always had so much fun together and “once I realized what a great guy I had on my hands, there was no way I was letting him go,” divulges Katy. “We’ve been inseparable ever since.” After graduating they traveled for the next nine months and “figured if we can handle each other 24 hours a day, seven days a week for that long of a time period,” say Katy, then “we have a pretty good chance of making it work.”

The proposal came the day after Christmas when Jarrod gave Katy her present first, but made her wait to open the card. “After a long and thoughtful note, at the bottom of the card was the sentence: ‘I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to ask you to marry me right now.’” Jarrod then awkwardly stumbled over packages under the tree and get down on one knee. “It was very endearing and very Jarrod,” shares Katy.

“We chose Big Sur for our wedding because of our love of the area and the time we spend hiking and camping there. It’s such a unique and beautiful place and we wanted to share our love of it with our family and friends on our wedding day,” says Katy. But, six months into the planning, they were informed that their favorite venue was closing due to a fire and they were faced with having to find a new location. Fortunately, fate led them to the perfect spot: a secluded, private property nestled into the rugged Big Sur cliffs, “literally just feet above the water,” says Katy.

Katy’s eye for art and innate sense of style proved to perfectly compliment the naturally beautiful setting. With a color palette of magenta, pewter and nude the stage was set for an incredible evening. “Mercury glass vases, crystal chandeliers and numerous varieties of local succulents all helped to achieve the perfect eclectic blend of elegance and nature,” notes Katy, whose mother had collected decorative pieces from all over in the time leading up to the wedding, adding to the artistic flare.

After a beach photo shoot, the couple arrived to their wedding in style via Katy’s step-father’s fully-restored Woody. Another personal touch was when Jarrod was escorted down the aisle by the couple’s dog, Sam, who was the acting ring bearer. Harp music played the couple’s favorite Ben Harper song as Katy strolled down the aisle in her Monique Lhuillier gown and Rene Caovilla shoes. The non-denomenational ceremony was presided over by Reverend Brian Lyke.

Afterwards, Katy and Jarrod stole a private moment away from their guests: seated alone and overlooking the ocean, they shared a toast on a bench that Jarrod spent months hand carving as a surprise wedding gift for Katy. A family-style meal ensued, which incorporated the couple’s “favorite tastes” of the California coast. Following dinner, the Money Band performed old school rock tunes and everyone danced under the stars. Then, as the evening quieted down, they all gathered to enjoy cordials and S’mores by the fire.

Katy and Jarrod honeymooned for three weeks along the coast of Croatia. After celebrating the start of their news lives together, they are also happy to remember how it all began. “We’re lucky to have built our relationship on a strong foundation of friendship, honesty and trust in one another. I don’t know if there really could be a better match for me out there; it just feels right when we’re together,” smiles Katy.

Twist of Fate: Thea & George Get Married

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Perhaps it is the fact that Yanni is Greek and his family still resides in Greece, but I have a love affair for the incredible destination. We were so excited when we started to open up the Platinum List internationally and one of our first members was the amazing and talented Urban Cinematography.

Last summer we shared Penny and George’s wedding with you and today I hope you enjoy Thea and George’s wedding. PS – the photographer for this wedding was Nikos P. Gogas. If you are not familiar with his work, you have to check out Kristine and Christopher’s wedding, which we featured in our newest issue. Enjoy!

Thea Ioakimidis and George Eliopoulos
Married in Halkidiki, Greece on August 20, 2011

Our love story was a twist on fate. It happened when we least expected it and there was no denying it. It was a match made in heaven that was a vision of a close mutual friend who knew this would work out perfectly.

After a few moments of persistence and describing one person to the other, George agreed to make the first call and throw caution to the wind. The chemistry was electrifying from the beginning and the connection made between us was undeniable. Fast-forward three years and our lives are finally complete. George swept me off my feet when he proposed and still is sweeping me off my feet every day of our new life together as man and wife. Life without each other is unimaginable.

Working with Urban Cinematography was and has been amazing. Apostolos is an incredible artist in every sense of the word. From the first time we met and viewed some of his previous work, I had no doubt and put all my trust in his hands to capture one of the most special days of our lives. I love sharing his work with friends and family and seeing their reactions. I have watched our video clip more than 100 times and it still gets me tearful every time. Apostolos and his team gave us a product we will treasure forever!

Cinematography: Urban Cinematography, Thessaloniki, Greece; Ceremony Location: Marmaras; Reception Location: Villa Galini Porto Carras, Halkidiki, Greece; Event Planner: Anna Piatou, Gala Special Events; Decorations: Xelle; Lighting: LOUD; Groom’s Attire: Gucci; Shoes: Manolo Blahnik; Wedding Gown: Lazaro; Photography: Nikos P. Once in a Lifetime: Post-Wedding Photo Shoot

Post-Wedding Photo Shoot

Post-Wedding Photo Shoot

Post-Wedding Photo Shoot

I have this mild obsession with Europe. I love the history and architecture. Everything seems so rich with culture and is done in such a sophisticated way. When I received this post-wedding photo shoot from Stephan Rauch, I knew I wanted to share some images with you.

I hope you are inspired. For those of you that don’t like your wedding photos or want to collect more pictures of you as a couple, definitely consider doing a photo shoot after your wedding. It can be the day after or on an anniversary, but either way, you can walk away with keepsakes that continue to show your love story.

I hope you like Dominque and Emanuell Torres’s photos taken on three-year wedding anniversary in Vienna’s Imperial Hotel. Enjoy!

Thank you so much Dominique and Emanuell for letting us share this with our readers and a huge thank you to Stephan Rauch of Stephan Rauch Photography for letting us share your incredible images!

A Royal Wedding: Joyela & Kenneth Get Married

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

I had the honor of shooting at the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida last year and loved it. So, when I saw Joyela and Kenneth’s royal wedding there I knew I had to share it with you. The grounds are incredible and the perfect backdrop to a couple’s nuptials.

Other things I love are Joyela’s shoes, the modern facade of the church, pictures of the couple under the arches, and the African dancers, to name a few. I hope you enjoy this wedding as much as I did.

Joyela Valentine and Kenneth Shobola
Married in Sarasota, Florida on April 26

Joyela Valentine had a very clear vision of her wedding day: “I want my guests to be treated like royalty!” And this was rather befitting considering Kenneth Shobola is a Nigerian prince. Every aspect of the wedding was meant to lavish guests from the red carpet entrance to the synchronized white-glove service, lavish décor and night of live entertainment.

Everyone rejoiced as Joyela’s church choir sang for her grand processional. However, tears came when the bride surprised her groom by reciting her vows in his native tongue: Yoruba. The reception consisted of king-style feasting tables decorated with orchids and crystals. Their guests were entertained by a live comedian and African dancers and plush lounge areas flanked the dance floor.

Full of Great Moments: Morgan & Nick Get Married

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

For me, Morgan and Nick’s wedding is the perfect example of how you can keep things simple and add big impact just by deciding how to spend your budget. What am I talking about you ask? Lighting. This is one of the biggest ways to add that wow factor to your wedding day: it creates a mood and sets the stage for the entire night. Of course, I might be biased growing up around my uber talented brother Tony of Ormonde Productions, but I think it is a category that is often overlooked and never should be.

Other things I love about this Philadelphia wedding are Morgan’s elegantly simple Romona Keveza gown, those watercolor-esque invitations by Wedding Paper Divas and those small little details like the horseshoe on Morgan’s bouquet.

PS – I also love that they opted to donate money to charity (PAWS) in lieu of traditional favors. Such a smart decision.

Morgan and Nicholas
Married in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 5, 2010

Morgan and Nicholas met at Loyola University. Nick told her she was “the most beautiful girl in the world” as he saw her coming out of a bar late one night, then tried hailing her a cab. She laughed him off, but then asked around about him. He did the same and mutual friends hooked them up.

Elegant, chic, sophisticated, fun and full of great moments are just a few words that describe what Morgan and Nick wanted for their wedding. Their ceremony was held at Old St. Joseph’s Church right near Independence Hall in Philadelphia. It is a beautiful old church with a cobblestone courtyard, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Old City/Society Hill. After the ceremony, Morgan and Nick ventured into the gardens behind the First Bank Building where “really pretty grass and trees with old buildings peak through.” It is “a nice little nature hideaway,” says Morgan, adding: “Just make sure you get a photo permit if you are doing wedding photos there.”

Morgan looked stunning in her Romona Keveza wedding gown and Nick looked handsome in Roberto Cavalli. The reception was held at The Franklin Institute, which boasts an elegant marble foyer with large pillars, archways and Benjamin Franklin himself presiding. Guests had cocktails in the adjoining exhibits, which included a huge walkthrough heart, skeletons on bicycles and homemade electricity. The couple chose flowers in pinks and jewel tones. “I especially loved the three different centerpieces,” says Morgan. They also used tables of varying sizes, which helped add to the visual interest.

Ceremony Location: Old St. Joseph’s Church, Philadelphia, PA; Reception Location: The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, PA; Caterer: Frog Commissary, Philadelphia, PA; Floral Design: Beautiful Blooms Events, Philadelphia, PA; Invitations: Wedding Paper Divas; Band: City Rhythm Orchestra; Suit: Roberto Cavalli; Makeup: Face The Occasion, Philadelphia, PA; Bridesmaid Dresses: J.
